Who knows about servers?

OK.. a really really shitty day. I get a phone call and all my sites are down. I get in touch with the hosting company and ask what the hell is up with my account. They tell me that the people they get their servers from unplugged the server and they're trying to get it back up. I get an email about two hours later telling me that my account has been moved to a more stable server but all my data is lost. As I had just relocated to this server I hadn't yet made a backup.. So, guess fucking what.. I no longer have any sites, scripts or anything online. Reuploading the design isn't an issue but i've lost all my damn data, months of news stories and the scripts all have to be reinstalled.

What could have happened on their end to lose all this info? Is it incompetence or something that could have legitimately happened. Someone told me that even if it was unplugged I shouldn't have lost the data..but i'm not sure if that's correct or not and the host didn't have that server backed up either. I just want to bitch at them and sound like I know what i'm talking about.

and yeah yeah I know.. I should have backed up.. I am kicking myself in the ass right now.:Graucho

I've had experiences like this before with hosts when I was new ...

I could almost bet you had a cheapie reseller host who didnt pay his bill

You may be right but i've used their regular hosting for quite some time with no problems. I recently upgraded to a huge account though and never thought twice about it. The guy actually told me that they had been experiencing problems with it since they first got it and I can't believe that they never informed us to be sure to backup in case of future problems. Granted I wasn't finished tweaking the sites with the new move to get them to a point to back them up but a little info would have been nice.

and i'm not new.. i've been around 4 years or so i've just never dealt with the host on this side of the issue before. I've always purchased from a reseller before and they took care of everything so i'm a bit ignorant on server procedures and functions.. *sigh*

It is my opinon that a customer should never lose data unless it is his fault .. or unless it was a provable act of nature (ie: fire, hurricane, tornado etc.), or a hardware issue and the company clearly stated that backups were the responsibility of the customer.

It is also my opinion that servers just shouldn't go down.

Shit happens.. you'll get downtime .. but for a company to say to me "yeah uh .. someone unplugged your server man ... and uh .. we moved you to another server 'cause uh .. we felt like it .. and uh .. guess what .. we lost your data" .. that to me would translate into:

"Dear unvalued customer. Please find somewhere else to host your web sites at since we are a bunch of fucking morons who don't know how to run things. Sincerely, your dumb ass web host".

I would be PISSED if I were you. Demand a refund and switch hosting companies. While you're looking read reviews, look for awards and customer feedback etc... look for network graphs, data center photos etc.

Buying a server is like buying a house. It's something you simply can't live without. So don't skimp on your decision.

If they are that stupid to just unplug when it can cause the hardrive to die you should change host!

Hit the guys up at TheXXXHost.com

sorry dude, got the same problem before.. everything wiped out from my HD all because i my instructions was misunderstood. Lesson learned? Store copies of backups to different locations as possible. You'll never kno0w what will happen to the months of sweet spent.

Ash@phpFX 03-24-2004 02:26 AM

thats really shit, ask them exactly how all of your data got lost, it sounds like someone fucked up to me

fuzebox 03-24-2004 02:33 AM

Definetly sounds like an ev1-reseller who either didn't pay or violated their TOS.

Basement hosting companies that go down without warning and don't provide backups or explanations when they lose all your data are lots of fun! (hello wizzhosting!)

erehwon 03-24-2004 06:34 AM

I have a religious obession with regularly backing up my data, using an off-site storage facility for the backed up media, and taking that one step futher by locating my high priority projects in datacenters outside of major metropolitan centers to avoid the chance of some natural or terrorist event shutting me down.

I really feel sorry for you, I hope yourself and others learn from this mistake, as you only wish it happens once.

You and the host deserve each other.

...and wtf has moving hosts have to do with backing up.

Learn, move on, and next time don't post in public when you piss your pants.

liquidmoe 03-24-2004 08:53 AM

If you are looking for a bit more stability in your hosts with backups hit me up on icq at 36837470, if you were paying bargain basement prices I won't match them, but I will give you a great rate on a dedicated server with true multihomed bandwidth and backups so you dont go through this again.

What an ass you are! Someone let high school out early today? I was just simply asking for some opinions so I could approach this company and play hardball with some knowledge obtained and I certainly didn't ask for this comment. With that said yes I do have some data from a backup prior to moving but not the bulk of it which I had input after moving and was trying to get the sites bulked up before I did a solid backup.

Thanks from everyone for the input and information i'll definitely be checking some of you out.
