The following sentence is true. The previous sentence is false. True or false?

Well?

Brain me.

jpwhits 03-23-2004 03:09 PM

Its false because you would go through the sentence assigning the value to the sentence

The following sentence is true (sentence=true)
The previous sentence is false (sentence=false)

Discuss?

Classic paradox.

You can wrangle with the logic for hours and never reach an absolute conclusion.

A is T
T is F
There is not truth in a lie
There are no lies in Truth

myjah 03-23-2004 03:49 PM

they cancel each other out

lopez 03-23-2004 03:52 PM

actually, its doable with math. now i suck at it and its too early, but look into techniques of proof, and math rules such as,modus ponens, negation of supposition, rule of contradiction and i think u can come out with a solution...

Both are true at a quantum level. And false.

Stuff like that is fun. You think about it for awhile and you feel like you're going to go insane because it's so simple yet so fucking impossible to figure out.

Dude.

That just made my brain totally fucking stop squirming. :(

Completely numb now. Thanks.

LOL :1orglaugh NP mr. :)

Mr. Marks 03-23-2004 07:13 PM

It's false because the second sentence made the first statement invalid already. Get it?

Serious.

I can look at lines and lines of complicated code and make perfect sense of them.

Your 2 statements followed by that question up there made everything immediately stop. :)

Good one.

Hehe... Paradox. So many solutions.

This one IS a true paradox. Thus, no solution.

But... I get it. :)

StuartD 03-23-2004 07:17 PM

Absolutely everything I say is a lie, including what I just said.

False, because there is 0 saying A is true, but there is 1 saying B is true, B wont disprove itself by calling A, who says B is true, false without a good reason :-)

Ok i will stop before what little left of my brain leaks out of my ears.

Your thoughts are blowing my mind. Your words are SO logic. But, this STILL is a paradox. Your words are only branching if you see it from the top.

Brat 03-23-2004 08:02 PM

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

yeah it's solvable in mathamatical terms ( like a fractal ) but not linguistically ( non abstract ) that i grasp.

I think, Succeeded. Regardless of what you 'tried' to do in the end you succeeded. 'I try to fail(test) and i succeeded(test)' I succeeded test.
