The new BMW 1 Series

BMW has released the following picture of the 125 Ci Hatchback. Along with the soon to be released BMW 2 Series, 2005 BMW M1, 2005 BMW M5, 2005 BMW X7 and 2005 BMW Z2, the 125 Ci will prove to be a difficult contender to other manufacturers. Stay tuned at streetracersonline.com for a full release of the new BMW 1 Series.

I guess BMW are moving into the small car market with this sweet car:

Rumoured to be costing $25k when it comes out.

I don't really like the look... The headlights just don't do it for me...

born4porn 03-20-2004 10:08 AM

I don't like it either, I think when luxury car makers try and bring out a compact model it usually looks wrong. :2 cents:

Wrong, they DIDN'T pull it off, the A class was shit and was received on the market as such. That's why they pulled it and ventured into making the SMART car instead, thus avoiding tarnishing their own brand name.

really? makes one wonder where all those A class Benzes are coming from then.

Smart is an own brand, "invented" by the Swatch designer Hajek, originally sposed to be sold as Swatch Car, when he realized how much it takes to build a proper car, he teamed up with MB and they renamed it to Smart. the new Smart Forfour will be a 4 seater based on the new Mitsubishi Colt or Honda Civic (it escapes me at the moment whioch one it is), no MB technology at all.

The A class was introduced on the market, sold some units and failed miserably in all car tests, and subsequently got pulled.

I could be wrong, but my knowledge of this is that Mercedes hired Hajek to design the Smart.

A 2004 635 with 23 miles sold at an auto auction last wednesday for $89,000, which is 20k over its retail msrp....

The X3 is selling less then even BMW's low estimates.....

Just my input....

Jason

BTW.... Anyone go to Sebring 12 hours ???

Yeah, I wouldn't consider it a BMW unless the price is at least $35,000. Same with the Porsche Boxster, that isn't a Porsche in my opinion. A fucking "affordable high end car," - what a fucking joke. :2 cents:

Ic3m4nZ 03-20-2004 08:40 PM

you are wrong there. the A class is alive and selling quite well. if it wasn't, BMW had no need to start a product like the 1 series, they could just stick with the Mini as their entry model. the failed tests you mention did lead to quick updates and adding some extras while they were at it.

some old articles, when it was still the Swatch car:

http://www.cnn.com/TECH/9704/19/germany.smart.car/

http://www.findarticles.com/cf_dls/m.../article.jhtml

and calling it a joint venture with MB:

http://www.rediff.com/business/2000/apr/25swatch.htm

the fact that today Smart cars are associated with MB helps their sales and isn't exactly worked against. AFAIK, MB dealers own the outlets for Smarts in most places.

I saw an A class in Brazil... Ugly car... looks like a mini-mini van

luxury car makers should stick to luxury cars... it ruins their image.
