I am not a programmer, or a server admin by any means - but I do have a few managed servers and am just trying to round out myself out as a webmaster.

This book is kick-ass. I highly recommend it!

yeah man... good skills to learn if you run your own site... of corse I am finding out that these skills, which I started learning a few years ago cause they were awesome... are absolutely unneeded in the professional world... well for those of us that still have day jobs.

I hate Microsoft... but if you wanna get paid you gotta learn their shit. even though unix is the server of choice... and php and mysql are the killer combo for applications and dynamic content... fucking .net bullshit... how bout .eatmyassberries... stupid corporate fucks.

sorry little rant there.

I wonder why corporations do this. I knew that unix was the way to go for making money on my own so why are these big companies so stupid and build their websites on such a crappy platform.

Maybe there is more human support for Microsoft and that pushes them in that direction; but at the same time it only takes 2 secs to find a unix expert to solve any problems.
Maybe they just live in the dark and that's why the Japanese and Chinese are getting richer of their ideas than they are.

Well, I know the answer... to the question about why they do it... tech support, believe it or not. The large corporation I worked for shot down a huge project I had worked on for quite a while. and the whole reason was tech support.

php, mysql, unix... non have a tool free 24-7 techline to call if shit goes belly up. mocrosoft will actually come to your business or office or datacenter and hardcore fix it if they have to... and believe it or not... companies live for that shit... also warranties. microsoft gives em out like candy to big ass companies... unix... no they have to pay a geek like me 80,000 a year in case something goes wrong.
