Safe to drive with a broken axel?Car questions

I think I broke the axle on on my car. I don't know much about cars, but I think I broke the axle because it's very hard for me to turn the steering the wheel, it won't go straight, and when I drive my car makes a huge noise now, and from googling I discovered that it was probably a broken axle.

My question is, is it safe to drive with a broken axle for a little bit? I am having fixed tomorrow, but I need to go do something right now. What is the worst that could happen?

And is it also possible for the axle to just break all of a sudden?? I drove my car yesterday and it ran just fine, and when I just started it a few minutes ago it was all messed up. I got in a car accident a few months and I hit another vehicle from behind... Could this have possibly caused the breaking of the axle?

Ans also, how much does an axle cost aprroximately? Just the part.

Just thought I'd ask here because there's lots of guys here who probably know about cars... Also I don't want to get ripped off when I go get it fixed tomorrow.

spelling: axel no axle oops

Could be the CV boot, connects the axle to the wheel, does it make noise when you turn?

i wouldn't risk it

Maybe your power steering is out.

Could be the CV joint...

I wouldnt risk it. Last time I broke an axle, I had to walk a few miles!

we had a kid in school driving home one night...his cv joint went out lost control hit a pole went through the windshield and cut his carotid artery...bled to death really damn quick.

I'll have to check again... But I recall it just making a loud noise today with the steering wheel all messed up...

Stephanie... what are signs that the power steering is out? How can I tell if it's the steering wheel or cv boot or axle? I need to know beforehand so I don't get ripped off when I go to the mechanics.
