What you're seeing is a rotation of a wall cloud. This is the first sign of an imminent tornado.

Tala 03-19-2004 12:28 PM

Here's another look at a rotating wall, only this time you can see the actual beginnings of the funnel cloud.

You would have to ask my uncle those questions. I like wild weather but don't know much about the technical stuff.

This tornado hit my building...I had to couch it at families places for over 3 months.
http://www.hprcc.unl.edu/nebraska/29to-9.jpg.

I was home whe it hit..knew something was coming when I looked out the window and saw debris falling from the sky.

As I ran down the hallway towards the stairwell at the center of the building windows in all of the apartments started to explode.
When I hit the stairwell the toranado hit the building...there was so much wind inside that stairwell I thought it was going to throw me around.

A FEMA approved storm cellar or shelter is a good investment if your house doesn't ahve a basement. If nothing else, go camp out in your bathtub (the plumbing holds it to the foundation, and most of the time, when a house is demolished, the bathtub will still be in place and its occupants uninjured.) with a mattress over you to protect you from debris.

Tornado season: 01 March - 30 September in most places, although they can happen at any time of year. We had one in January not too many years ago, did some serious damage.

eroswebmaster 03-19-2004 01:05 PM

These building were directly across the street from me:
http://www.fortwortharchitecture.com/tandy-t.jpg http://www.fortwortharchitecture.com/bank1-t.jpg

This was the biggest building hit before mine was...I lived in a 10 story "high rise."
http://www.fortwortharchitecture.com/cash-t.jpg

The streets were like a river of glass.

One pick up truck out in front ofmy building the roof of the cab was almost peeled off as if a giant can opener was trying to open it up.

Growing up in Texas and having family in parts of Tornado Alley I've seen my fair share of tornados and cellars..LOL

when my parents were going through divorce my grandparents had temporary custody of us kids...and damn spring time in the Panhandle of Texas is no fun place to be.

We would be awakened in the middle of the night by my grandmother and have to go and sit in the living room and watch the news...and probably at least once a week we had to go down into the cellar.

One of the last big ones to hit the area you'll see the footage on the discovery channel all fo the time..it's the one where there's this big tornado and they put a circle around an 18 wheeler that's flying around in it....LOL

My family all made it through that but my grandmother was on her way home from a baseball game a cousin had and they had to run into the cold storage of a small 7-11 type store...she had a heart attack.

Another story she tells is the time she was coming back from Fritch and she my grandfather aunt and cousins had to lie in a drainage ditch as a tornado passed nearby...they had to hold the kids down the wind was so strong and they were only like 3 or 4 at the time.

My dad growing up in that area is traumatized...LOL

If you see a cloud in the sky it's freakout time for him.

I just did some design work for Fox's new movie, "The Day After Tomorrow" and here is one of the screenshots from it I used on a movie poster. It's obviously not real but it's an awesome picture of a tornado! :thumbsup

I didn't actually design that scene. It was a digital matte provided by Fox for me to use on a poster I did for the movie. They have some phenominal artwork on their ftp server but I don't think they'd like it too much if I posted them without permission. :winkwink:

Amazing: it almost looks like an icecream doesn't it? Or something in snow.... You start to forget these things are very destructive and dangerous... :)

Nice timing: we are just coming up for the main tornado season :(

In April 2000 a T3 went through the center of my town, doing some major damage, but amazingly not killing anyone and only a couple of dozen with minor injuries. It completely took out a building back of my house, dumping a lot of it on my roof. It tipped a big tree onto the front of the house too, but I got away lightly compared to many.

The noise of a 160+ mph wind going by is like an express train. That one tornado did about $35 million worth of damage, even in a largely rural area.

A short but impressive video-clip here:
