Is it normal to have black shits?...seriously

The last 2 days my dumps have been a really dark almost black color. I eat the same as I normally do. Any doctors in the house?

Eric 03-17-2004 11:51 AM

How much protein have you been eating compared to normally?

PenetratinP 03-17-2004 11:52 AM

that's called "hangover black"

twistyneck 03-17-2004 11:52 AM

I take multi-vitamins every other day or so

HS-Trixxxia 03-17-2004 11:52 AM

I'd call a medical info line - or call your doctor. It's not normal if you are eating the same foods as usual.

Raf1 03-17-2004 11:52 AM

sounds like shit

SMG 03-17-2004 11:55 AM

Taste it. If it has a funny aftertaste, see a doctor.

Hmmm, good idea.

Kassidy 03-17-2004 11:58 AM

Been drinking a lot of red wine or eating dark green veggies like spinach?

And, Pete, if you find you can't stop eating it after that first addicting bite, just peruse your local Yellow Pages. I am sure there will be a "Fecal Anonymous" support group with weekly meetings near you.

I'm not a Dr., but a nurse if that helps. Do your multi-vitamins contain iron? Iron will make your stools black...but if you've been taking them for a while, this just wouldn't of started.

To answer your question...no, it's not "normal" to have black shits. If it's a true black, tarry color, then that is a sign of "old blood".

Make an appt with your Dr., there is a quick and simple test they can do to determine if there is occult blood in your stool.

Good Luck.

Any change in your stools/color/habits should be checked out. Especially if it's persistent and not just a one time thing.
I'd still advise going to the Dr., telling him about the change...more than likely they'll take a little stool sample and do something that's called a "Hemoccult" test. They can tell within seconds if there is blood in your stool.

I'll have to hunt up a pic of me in my scrubs...let me see what I can do. :thumbsup

Honeyslut 03-17-2004 12:43 PM

Make them check for an ulcer , TOO!

JFK 03-17-2004 01:06 PM

As it has been stated , it could be blood in your stool, from an ulcer, or something. Stop hanging around here go see your doctor!:2 cents:

that's right. Do a search on the word 'melena or melaena'. I would definitely advise you to visit your doctor.

arial 03-17-2004 01:25 PM

Mine are usually green.

goBigtime 03-17-2004 01:30 PM

Drink any pepto or eat any beets in the past week?

If not... get that shit checked out pronto.

Black stools not caused by food are not a good thing.

hottoddy 03-17-2004 01:31 PM

As noted above, it could be a sign of bleeding in the upper GI tract (old blood that takes a while to work out).

Possible Cause:
Recent consumption of green,
leafy vegetables; licorice;
chocolate; grapes, raisins and
cranberries.
Current use of iron-
supplement tablets.
Recent use of Pepto-Bismol.
Or a Adverse reaction or side effect of drug. If discoloration continues consult doctor. NOT GFY MEMBERS! :321GFY

SENSEX 03-17-2004 02:03 PM

wow, the last few days my shits have been darker then normal too. I was a little worried especialy when i started reading up on what the causes might be.
I have not had pains, or weight loss, and they don't smell any worse then usual. Ive been drinking alot of chocoalte milk lately, and I think that might beit. Today my poo was brown again, but it was weird, there were black sections in the poo. If im not back to shitting brown by tommorow, im going to the doctor. All day long im thinking i have cancer, ulcers, etc... Damn webmd.com has me paranoid.

GoLiaT 03-17-2004 02:24 PM

sounds like you have ulcer
do you have a pain right below the ribs sometimes ?
if you have not lose any weight and dont feel tired
its probably nothing to worry about
but its better to go to the doctor so you dont have to be worried
