movable flat panel tv in front of a fireplace

i'd like to be able to install some sort of automated system that moves a lcd tv down in front of a fireplace, and back up above it when running the fireplace. does such a thing exist?

here's a pic of the spot i'm talking about (of course i'd remove the wood mantel).

i thought i'd heard about something like this a couple years back on a tv show, anyone know what i'm talking about? space is at a bit of premium here, which is why i'd be very interested in such a solution if it exists... thanks :)

great idea provided you dont forget to shut off the fireplace before watching TV :1orglaugh

You should look into getting a projection screen TV, then you can just get a screen that will retract automatically. :2 cents:

i think a projection is sort of overkill for this place, but yeah that might work.

If you had lived in the Netherlands I would know where to get a thing that could do that, I can only tell you that it exists......

Looks like a good space for a flat panel. You may want to change the fireplace enclosure to a heat containing enclosure using either tempered glass or a steel/glass combo.

Leave the tv there, and put on a recording of a fire whenever you feel cozy.

You might find someone in your area who is experiened with such custom installation matters through the finder service on CEDIA.

Any reason why you wouldn't just set it on the mantle? I think that would look sweet there.

agreed that it would look fine. but sore necks suck... definitely want it at eye level.

If that fireplace is going to be used a lot I wouldn't locate an expensive set right near it. But if you do, you'll need a custom heat reflective enclosure for sure.

I'd pickup a copy of Home Theater Magazine. Its got all sorts of suppliers in there.

Im not sure i would put it above the fire, but that would look pretty sweet.

Why would you want the TV down on the floor

above the mantle would give you better viewing anyway

Yes, It can be done, they did the exact same thing on the tv program Monster House. You just need to find yourself a good engineer/carpenter.

noooooooooooooo, just put a theatre in a different room. :thumbsup plus you can keep out the light.
