Feds wire tapping the Internet?

Technology companies should be required to ensure that law enforcement agencies can install wiretaps on Internet traffic and new generations of digital communications, the Justice Department says.

Fearful that federal agents can't install wiretaps against criminals using the latest communications technologies, lawyers for the Justice Department, FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration said their proposals "require immediate attention and resolution" by the Federal Communications Commission.

may seem far fetched , but your not far off. Most people do deals thru YMEE Yahoo Mesenger Enterprise Edition ( fully encrypted messages )

Supposedly al-queda has been using it as well..

And , i know for a fact the u.s. goverment uses it to locate snipers in iraq by spy sattelite. They do the locating from virginia and then send instant messages to soldiers in the field in iraq, about positioning of snipers, teanks , etc..

I watched this one girl, must have been about 19 sitting in a trailer in virginia watching predator drone images and she spotted a sniper on a rooftop ( they even showed the footage ) , and she emailed the troops that were less than 100 yards from the snipers position and had him executed..

But as far as the "big brother" ideas, you also have to take into account the enormity of a project like that

Lets just assume they were using whats known as "keyword" traces, where if they pick up words like ANTHRAX , AL-QUEDA , NUCLEAR WEAPONS, BUY PLUTONIUM it starts recording what you say and send it to the f.b.i.

You would have to have literally billions and billions of humans to interpret the data recorded.

Way to large of a task. Im sure they have smaller more precise keyword type monitoring, but not on the scale that you would imagine.

Only an idiot would trust either the Yahoo or the AOL AIM encrypted chat to keep their conversations private.

If you are looking for that level of security, you are better off rolling your own crypto for applications like that.

There should be a law to protect privacy over the internet. They can't just tap in through private rooms.
