person says card stolen and used illegally - but it's been recurring for 5 months

I just had an email from someone asking to cancel the account as the card had been stolen 'recently' and it had been used 'illegally' to sign up for my site. I checked back and the original signup was in August 2003, so something certainly doesn't smell right. If the card was used without their consent then surely they would have noticed it by now?

This person only asked to cancel, so I cancelled and refunded the most recent charge... but I hope they are not going to push it further, 5 months worth of chargebacks is going to hurt. :(

BTW, they are in the same city as me, and I was able to confirm that their address details in the phone book match the details entered into the signup form.

What are your thoughts? Complete bullshit? Family member who discovered their son/brother signed up for the site and they're trying to cover up? Remember they only asked to cancel...

Joetanto 03-11-2004 08:40 PM

if the card is still valid and not reported I doubt it was stolen. Just a cheap ass

rowan 03-11-2004 08:43 PM

Perhaps it really WAS stolen recently and in the process of going over her statements with a fine tooth comb she has just discovered her son has been spanking off to webcam girls for the past 6 months. :Graucho

I replied and asked when it was stolen, and offered to help with the police investigation. Hopefully that will be enough of a hint that the needle on my BS meter is starting to wiggle.

Illicit 03-11-2004 08:44 PM

should have told him to :321GFY

5 month loyal customer, offer him an extra free month he might come back one day and stay another 5 months.

riosluts 03-11-2004 08:49 PM

yeah alot of adult websites rely on surfers signing up and forgetting to cancel.

I just got to wonder; how much lube and tissues did he go through in 5 months? and did he charge back them too????

tony286 03-11-2004 10:20 PM

You still have no say without a signature I dont care if you have photos of him jerking off to your site in his house. Unfortunately we have almost no voice against this and it sucks. I will say this again I think cb's are a profit center if not a electronic signature would of been created and perfected a long time ago.

Brat 03-11-2004 10:23 PM

you wouldnt believe the amount of people who don't go over their monthly statements and who only call months later, freaking out about a recurring charge that's been charged for half a year.

it's so annoying. i hate people who do that. it's called 'monthly statements' for a reason.

Mr. Marks 03-11-2004 10:36 PM

Lies.....

pudcat 03-11-2004 10:51 PM

Back before I started in this industry, my card got somehow leaked to some horny prick who signed up to some website and registered a domain. Think it was $20 recurring with ccbill. I couldn't be bothered cancelling it until after the 4th rebill or so as I was kinda hoping that it'd just stop and I wouldn't have to get off my lazy ass.

Sexzity 03-11-2004 10:58 PM

Look at the header in the mail from him and look in your logs.

Then you know if it is the same person.

Could be he send the cancel mail with the same mail he sign up with :1orglaugh

Yea most likely . He probably didn't realise his son was using his card...

Arty 03-12-2004 12:27 AM

That might help, see if it's ever reported as stolen..

pimplink 03-12-2004 01:44 AM

study the case thoroughly.

Axeman 03-12-2004 01:46 AM

Just somebody trying to get out of his charges.

No way he goes 5 months not notifying the credit card company of it being lost.

Living For Today 03-12-2004 01:50 AM

yep definitely no way they didnt know.

Just got a reply back - she says the card was stolen nearly a year ago. I'm scratching my head about this one, surely she would (should) have notified the bank immediately, especially if the card has been used for at LEAST the past 5 months on my site (and probably elsewhere too). If she didn't tell the bank it was stolen then she probably won't be able to recover everything. I doubt they would allow a chargeback from a year ago.
