California Lawmakers Propose Voting Age of 14
 

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (March 8) - A proposed amendment to California's constitution would give 16-year-olds a half-vote and 14-year-olds a quarter-vote in state elections.

State Sen. John Vasconcellos, among four lawmakers to propose the idea on Monday, said the Internet, cellular phones, multichannel television and a diverse society makes today's teens better informed than their predecessors.

The idea requires two-thirds approval by the Legislature to appear on the November ballot.

"When we gave the vote to those who didn't own property, then to women, then to persons of all colors, we added to the richness of our democratic dialogue and our own nation's integrity and its model for the world," Vasconcellos said, calling it time to further extend the vote.

A Republican colleague said it was "the nuttiest idea I've ever heard."

Okay... maybe 17 or something. But 14-16 year olds? WTF... this is so wrong. These kids have no idea what the hell the world is about how can they POSSIBLY vote??

If anything it should be 21. Why should some 18 year old kid that never paid any real taxes or have any life experience be voting.

For too long, teens have been pawns for politicians.
They can gaurantee votes from older americans by violating the rights of younger americans.

The blind senile elderly support taking drivers licenses away from teenagers, but would never give up their own despite statistics showing their age group to be far more dangerous.

Citys impose curfews where you can be taken to jail for being out past evening, depite doing nothing criminal. I can recall multiple occasions from HS where kids would be arrested literally outside their own houses.. cops wouldn't even go up to the door to notify the parents.

Yeah, some kids are bad. Some are thieves and vandals or worse. But you can't pre-emptively punish everybody for the actions of a few. Imagine if they used the same logic for racial minorities, to prevent crime; or for women, for "their own safety".

Why do kids shoot up schools? Because they are systematically disrespected and have no effective way of expresing their anger. I'd rather they use ballots than bullets.

On some issues, like education, teens are the best informed. They're not making judgements based on experiences 20 years ago; they're current. They know better than anyone what's wrong in schools today.

If a 17 year old (or younger) is old enough to be a soldier...

It's actually good that Marijuana is illegal because if it is legalized, you can betcha Big Brother will find a way to TAX the SHIZNIT out of it. This causes regular Ganja smokers to quit due to the EXTREME price of making a regulated consumer purchase of Weed.
