gfy database desync (NOT downtime)
 

we've all noticed the downtime and sporadic server outages. i'm not asking about that. i'm wondering if you guys (lensman/adult.com) are relying on mysql replication in the backend for the databases? sometimes i've seen posts come and go, which is a telltale sign of either odd caching (not likely for this) or using replication.

just wondering, i've been relying on it for months and it sucks. i'm about to stop using it soon.

What problems are you seeing with it personally? I know many many people who use it just fine. Well, 4.x code base.

What version are you running?

4.x - i'm replicating data to 4 slaves and rely on it for real-time access.

looked great on paper, but the hardware/bandwidth can't keep up.

if any slaves get out of sync for any reason either, i have to take down the master db box and allow the slave to sync up (you can do it without taking it down,but it sets the entire master DB to read-only anyway.)

it's crappy.

anyway, i have a beefy fucking dual opteron box coming in for my new database server. so i'm all set :)

I've played around with mysql replication in the past, but its always been a bit unstable, losing sync at odd times for no real reason.

Whats the \s status show on your 4 servers for queries per sec?

master db box: 284 (it's only a dual p3 800 with a gig of ram and it also does my NFS)

slave: 8 queries per sec

i don't believe it counts replication :)

the sad thing is, all the replication shit is is just sending the same queries to all the slaves. it's really not "smart" at all. all it does is track where it left off.

the code is designed to hit the master db box for writes and VERY important reads. hit the [local webserver] slaves for reads. as you can see, shit sucks at the moment. not balancing very nicely.

(i've also got a couple clients using my master db box... blahblahblah) - i have a new cluster setup being setup that will address a lot of this.

yeah, the miss nude oregon shit is still going on. they had it last year and some chicks have mentioned it this year...

d2 changed it's entire layout now it's all cramped and they've got 3 different style stages now, the chicks hate it (supposedly only temporary) but they don't know how they can do all the miss nude oregon activities on such small/lame stages.

who knows. heh

Are you still planning to replicate when you replace the master server with something else? At this stage I dont trust replication so we just upgrade the hardware until a single server is capable of pushing the entire sql load.

nope.

in the new setup the beefy master box will handle all of the sql load.

i will forward cache only a few things to local mysql servers - just to help save unnecessary/redundant/cached-style queries from the master db.
