Happy Birthday - Spam Turns 10
The first emails which could be classed as spam were sent out 10 years ago last Friday. The advertising mails were sent by the Canter and Siegel law firm, advertising their Green Card lottery services.
Web services firm Netcraft said: "It is probably no coincidence that the practice of email spam arose just as the web was becoming a mass medium." "Its growing popularity, and the natural tendency of enthusiastic users to include email contact details on their sites, made address harvesting easier," Netcraft continued, saying that with hindsight legal steps should have been taken 10 years ago. |
