Braces - Any available that are invisible and get the job done?

Basically i need braces. I didnt get em as a child cause my parents are idiots. What are some good options for braces? I have no idea what kind of technological advancements have been made since 3rd grade or whatever with the huge metal squares being put in front of your teeth held together by silver wire..

Ive heard of invisalign but the rate of teeh straightening is extremely slow. Are there other options? 'Invisible' braces? Braces that fit in the back of the teeth instead of the front so you cant see em? Ones you put on at night? Ones that are so small theyre indistinguishable? You get the idea..

Anyone know what good brace options are available and their approximate price tag?

these are the only ones that i have heard of.. but i don't know anyone personally that has ever got them.

Can't you just put in normal braces colored white instead of metal?

zentz 03-06-2004 05:41 AM

what are you talking about ?

talk to your dentist about surgery and have it done in one go like a hollywod star. followed by weeks of pain though, i'd guess.

Hmm, my dentist gave me something like those to bleach my teeth. They cost a few hundred for the molds. I don't see how you would be able to eat with those on. I don't mind wearing them for a little while to whiten my teeth but wearing them all day would suck. :(

bopha 03-06-2004 06:24 AM

You take them out to eat. You have to get new ones every few weeks. I don't think that's slow at all.

My aunt is a hygenist for an orthodontist that uses them. She said they are great. I'm getting them also.

You can also put your whitening gel in them although invisilign doesn't recommend it. My aunt says everyone does that.

any other options?

well, when I was in high school I got into a fist fight with a guy that wore braces, and as a result he got his removed much earlier than anticipated, with his teeth straightened

I'm getting my teeth fixed. I got braces put on last week. They're just regular braces but these are the top of the line and you can hardly see them.

WiredGuy 03-06-2004 03:42 PM

I had braces for 3 years, just had them removed about 6 months ago. I hated the way they felt and looked for those 3 years but they were really worth it. I had the metallic ones on the bottom and ceramic on the top. Never heard of the invisialign ones mentioned in this thread but by the site its more expensive than braces (and probably not all covered by most dental plans) and will likely take longer.

I'd rather go through the hassle and get rid of them faster than slower and looking better. My opinion at least.

Braces are sexy. Don't hide them. (Unless you're a dude).

Maximillion 03-06-2004 04:00 PM

good thread

i may get braces cuz my teeth arent 100% straight

what if money isn't a factor? what shoud I get/do?

There are a few different types of braces.

Lingual - Braces type that go behind the teeth.
http://www.sixmonthbraces.com/lingual%20braces.htm

Invisalign - Most people who need braces cannot use them
because they have strict usage guidlines.

Mini-Braces - Simliar to normal braces but the brackets are half
the size.

Ceramic - Clear brackets the metal wire is still visible.

I chose a mixture of ceramic and metal. My front six teeth
had ceramic braces and the rest were metal.

Here is a link that shows a few of the options with photos.

I know people that had lingual braces, you really do not notice them at all.. They often also have extra braces for the night to enforce the effect a little during the time it does not matter much.

if there are lingual braces that go behind the teeth, then why isn't everybody using them? are they worse?

Lingual braces might be used as an alternative to a retainer after you have your braces removed, to ensure they stay in the same position

but they cant be used as a replacement for regular braces?

Forget the braces and get veneers. I don't deal with ortho so I can't compare pricing on braces vs. veneers, but veneers are a bit pricey. Very well worth it, though, especially if you want a quicker, less painful result.

Geezus...your tongue would look like a chunk of fucking hamburger. Ouch!

whats a veneer?

emmanuelle 03-06-2004 05:04 PM

I had the clear ceramic ones put on at 25. As an adult, you dont want a mouth full of metal to be the first thing that people notice about you. They took 2 1/2 years and cost the same as metal.

The clear tiny ties that go around them tend to discolor very easily though. I was constantly going in to get those changed. Anything with artificial chicken flavoring (think lipton soup or rice-a-roni) would turn the ties neon yellow, casting a yellow glow on your teeth!

Can't even see them. Just get them. I wish I didn't wait till I was 25 to do it. Thought I was too cool for them in high school.

Most dental plans suck rocks. I've learned this the hard way recently with a $12k dental bill. Good thing my dentish wanted a new website....barter
is king.

I'll try to explain without getting too technical. Basically, it's like a crown that covers your existing tooth. Where a crown would either completely or 1/2 way replace your natural, a veneer/laminate would replace about 1/4 to 1/3 of your natural tooth. The dentist preps your natural and a veneer is made to fit over it.

Had a case about a month ago where the patient's lower anteriors were really crooked & had a crossbite on 2 teeth. Normally, lazy dentists would be quick to extract a couple teeth & ship him to an orthodontist to slap on braces. Instead, this dentist prepped for veneers and 3 weeks later the patient walked away with straight teeth.

If ya have any more Q's, feel free to hit me up on ICQ. 308-55-365
