Not sure if this has been posted before but Wired.com is running an article about digital camera owners buying the Nomad Muvo2 for $200, dismantling it, and using the 4GB MicroDrive (after formatting) in their digital cameras. Those drives normally run $500 according to the article.

I've got one on the way :thumbsup

do you realise that the hard dirves run a lot slower than compact flash cards, it will increase the time between shots dramatically

Umm how much slower? you are already streaming music and such off of it.

I am sure the write/read speed isn't something ridiculous.

However, Yee said he still plans to use CF cards for races and events involving high-speed action. The drive's performance when storing pictures is "pretty dismal," he said. "I could be left waiting for the camera to write out shots to the microdrive and miss a shot."

im not sure on the specs, but i know it is slower, read the wired.com article and it mentions it i believe.

the reason it that one is a hard drive and one is flash memory, the hard drive would never be able to keep up the same speed

Slower?

yeah slower, as in the data transfer rate is slower, which also makes your camera go slower because it needs more time to store the images between shots

Compare the speed difference between RAM and your hard drive. The difference between a microdrive and a compact flash is similar.

Writing to a microdrive is a mechanical operation and cannot be done as fast as writing to a memory card.

psyko514 03-05-2004 03:54 AM

- Compact Flash has a data transer rate of 8 MB a second.
- Compact Flash 2.0 has a data transfer rate of 16 MB a second.
- Microdrive's data transfer rate varies from 4.2 MB a sec to 7.2 MB a sec.

Flash memory better of course! More faster!
