Can you find out what state a person lives in through there IP?
Hey guys,
I'm having a hacking issue... a person keeps sending me virused emails from a hotmail account.. I'm wondering, is there a way, if i can obtain the ip that it came from, to find out what state they live in? I think i know who it is, but if i find out the state then I'll be positive on the person... thanks! |

most of the time.
Whats the ip? edit.. sorry didn't read your post. Is the IP it's coming from ALWAYS the same? If not, they are probably using proxies to send the mail... would be a lot harder to get their IP.... unless you just go ahead and install the virus they want you to run, but do it on a stripped down dummy box.... that is if your reasonably sure its one person/company trying to get you and not just the every day random viruses that everyone gets emailed these days. |

Then paste the line or two that says Received: from .................... |
Anyway I doubt they are specifically targetting YOU... it's probably just the mydoom virus trying to replicate itself from someone (or many people) that you have contacted in the past who are now infected.
Mydoom is smart in the sense that it randomizes all the reply-to addresses to appear as if they are coming from any random domain in the infected persons contact list -- including people who aren't infected. So the people who aren't infected get a bunch of bounced emails saying they are infected which creates a bunch of false alarms, so people don't know if they are infected or not. ie.... [email protected] gets the virus.... his contact list is compromised. Imagine his contact list had: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] it would then try to infect all 3 of the contacts above, but it might claim that [email protected] sent the email to everyone else... instead of the real (infected) sender - @joe.com Or it might actually use other infected machines to relay the message from. |
if u show all headers in the email u will see where it came from
