IRS Has Tax Deduction for Weight Loss Efforts
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has a tax deduction to help cover expenses such as stomach stapling, nutritional counseling, and approved weight-loss drugs. In April 2002, the IRS determined obesity was a disease. A Doctor's diagnosis is needed.
The deduction must be itemized and be over 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income. For example, a person who makes $50,000, must have over $3,750 in expenses. A person who has $25,000 gastric bypass operation might be helped by this deduction.
American Obesity Association Director Morgan Downey praises the deduction which he says "takes a different approach from the normal kind of urging everyone to diet and exercise as a lifestyle recommendation." Adult obesity has doubled in 20 years.
