Overture/Yahoo Introduces Site Match Service

Overture had mentioned in the past that with their AlltheWeb and Altavista buyouts that they would be merging alot of their advertising, but never did I expect this.

Their new Site Match service is a combination PayPerClick/PayPerInclusion service that goes directly into Yahoo's search results as shown:

http://www.content.overture.com/images/ays/sm_chrt.gif

For a $49.00 review fee per url (no guarantee of inclusion), and a pay per click fee in the area of 15-30c/click you can get featured into the main search engine listings of Yahoo/Altavista/AllTheWeb where position is determined by relevance.

Full details: http://www.content.overture.com/d/USm/ays/sm.jhtml

This just seems to be an overkill, charging a listing fee and a per click fee in the area of 15-30c. Basically, an identical stab at Looksmart's business model and even similiar pricing.

This is gonna put me in a world of hurt:(

BradM 03-02-2004 12:27 AM

Good idea.
I want to pay $50 for no reason at all.
No guarantee.

WG: Can you give me $500? No guarantee I'll do anything for you for it.

Keev 03-02-2004 12:27 AM

Interesting!

Might have to plop some extra money in play with that alittle see how the roi is.

I'll review your site for $500. No guarantee I'll get it into Google, but she's in bed right now so I can have her drop by your site in the morning :)

It just boggles my mind that they are releasing this as a huge good thing. When in reality they are now in the biz of selling product that may or may not exist.

God damnit. Talk about shady

YAHOO SHAVES Site Match listings

Do you think its worth it?

Total Invoice: $99.00 ? for 1 listing

nap 03-02-2004 12:35 AM

So the only real contender that we have to take on Google was Yahoo and now Yahoo turns out to be a bitch? Get fucking real. For once I am actually pulling for MS to take over an industry. Fuck Yahoo

IPK 03-02-2004 12:37 AM

didn't somebody just post this, or was it you? yeah this is ridiculous!

Abyss_Vee 03-02-2004 12:38 AM

$99 for a possible inclusion, $50 in traffic (at 15-30c) and no position guarantee. I could still rank on page 8 for all I know.

No freaking way, they can't even convince me on a good selling angle here. At least fluff it up to provide something to convince me to buy. An Inktomi spider for $25/year is probably a better investment. Hell, Overture's sponsored listings only start at 10c per click and that guarantees me hits. This site match service has no guarantees.

They just broadcasted their mailers announcing this service I believe.

EDIT: You're right, this thread (http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...89#post3503689) had gotten to page 2 so i didn't notice it. Sorry for the double thread.

WG

Dildozer 03-02-2004 12:43 AM

Anyway it's flawed

A few kids with hitbots could basically take a shitload of listings offline, then the free listings would pop back

Yahoo can lick my balls

Im giving it a try, this isnt for my adult sites though, so far im running adwords, and the pay-per overture.. might as well try this one out too.

Adwords has been better then overture by far.. but lets see how this does..

i also did inktomi for 1 year

Abyss_Vee 03-02-2004 12:45 AM

How did that do? I think wherever you ranked for the Inktomi would be similiar for this service, except add on the per click charges now as well.

Let us know how you do with this service.

4 months ago i was listed on the Top 10 of google, msn, aol, netscape, yahoo and a few smaller search engines for about 15 keywords,, but last month,,, everything went to shit for some reason,, so i started all the pay per click advertising till i re-optimize the site. i'll know by 1 month if its good :thumbsup

adamneve 03-02-2004 12:55 AM

i guess google will remain the main " player "

IPK 03-02-2004 12:56 AM

Getting good traffic is getting tougher and tougher.

TurboTrucker 03-02-2004 12:58 AM

I'm confused. Is this just pay for inclusion? They show site match under regular web results, what if I'm already in Inktomi is this going to help my position?

It's a combination per inclusion and per click. You pay for the inclusion but its done by an editor. If approved, you get a 48 hour spider like Inktomi's. You ALSO pay 15-30c for each hit received, so its a combination per click / inclusion.

Yahoo's results are not pure inktomi so a good inktomi listing will not necessarily translate into a good yahoo listing.

R.I.P. Yahoo 2004 :sadcrying

sacX 03-02-2004 01:48 AM

95% (to pull a random number out of the air) of SE queries aren't worth >15cents a click. I would think there would still be plenty of free traffic to be had..

Google for life!!!! The rest sucks!!! :1orglaugh

KraZ 03-02-2004 02:34 AM

That's kinda funny ... combines the WORST of both worlds: you pay for inclusion AND you pay a premium per click.

Murphy's Law says in 3 years we'd wish this model stuck 'cos they'll think of something even more fucked up...

how comes one get into the inktomi listings?

looks like they might stop this service because of site match

Inktomi doesn't sell listings directly anymore. You have to use one of their resellers to purchase an inclusion.

strobi 03-02-2004 10:02 AM

been posted here before, but 30 cents/click! Woa not alot of room for trial and error!

I really dont like what Yahoo has been doing of late.

$50 and then click per click? wow.

It's a similiar model to Looksmart although I can't see this being accepted widely among advertisers.
