    Racist or not?

    I don't think so, but I found myself in an uncomfortable situation this weekend.

    So my twins get invited to a birthday party for one of their 3 year old friends who happens to be hispanic.
    So we go to the party and all his family is there, like 50 hispanic and maybe 6 white.

    So the kid starts opening his presents, and after the 3rd toy lawn mower I say, "Man you guys are teaching him early huh?"

    You could have heard a pin drop, the whole room went silent and everyone glared at me.

    I swear to god all I meant by that was that they were teaching him to mow the yeard early, I didnt mean to become another hispanic landscaper.

    I felt like Larry David.
    Now everyone hates me, was I racist?

          Not racist at all! I think you were making an innocently funny comment, with no bad intentions at all. How the rest of the party decided to interpret the comment is their problem. Besides, I have never even heard of the "Hispanic landscaper" stereo-type!

                              To the person who's never heard of the Hispanic gardener stereotype what rock have you been living under? It's probably the Number 1 stereotype for Hispanic men.

                              If you went to a Jewish home for a child's birthday party and everybody was Jewish - and while opening the presents the kid got his third piggy bank you commented to 50 adults of the Jewish persuasion "Man you guys are teaching him early huh?" - you'd have received the same reaction. Probably A LOT worse.

                                              No one is living under a rock. I too have not heard that before. Perhaps because we live in Canada and don't have many hispanic landscapers here??? Not sure, but it comes as a surprise to me....
