Explosion Kills Mom at Son's Paintball Birthday Party

When Mark Contois took his son Caleb and some friends to play paintball to celebrate Caleb's 10th birthday, he never imagined anyone could possibly get hurt, especially after the game was over.
But as the children stood around breaking down the guns after the game, there was a loud bang, and Contois felt his wife Colette's head hit his shoulder.

"Her right eyes rolled back to the back of her head," he remembers. "I turned and screamed and we both fell to the ground."
As one of the young players was breaking down his weapon, the carbon dioxide canister that powers it unexpectedly separated from the gun and hit Colette Contois in the back of the head. She died instantly.

Well at least she died instantly. Don't necessarily want to go that way but I would want instantely or in my sleep.

thumbsdepot 02-29-2004 12:02 PM

His birthday is never going to be the same. How can you celebrate the day that your mom died?

Fletch XXX 02-29-2004 12:04 PM

childrens birthday parties are dangerous.

helium tanks, drunk uncles, knives, pinatas, all kinds of shit you can die from.

paintball guns are just one way

AdultNex 02-29-2004 12:04 PM

I'd say that Paintball is one of the most dangerous "sports" you could play.

A friend of my permanently damaged his eye while cleaning his painball gun.

Huggles 02-29-2004 12:05 PM

Owned?

What are the fucking odds. I was talking with someone in Vegas, I forget who, who was into paintball and was saying that in the entire history of paintballing nobody has died. He rattled on about how in football, hockey, baseball, all these other sports had people die while playing them, yet never has a paintball player died. Maybe this doesn't count because it wasn't on the field.

Play paintball in big forests nothing beats that.

wyldblyss 02-29-2004 12:16 PM

That is just terrible. He is going to remember that on his birthday forever.

Joesho 02-29-2004 12:16 PM

BS. There's less injuries in paintball than in Football or soccer.

I've been playing for 12-13 years now and so far I haven't seen one single serious accident. I've seen some sprained ankles and stuff, nothing more.

If you haven't made sure you don't have any paint balls left in the barrel AND let the air out of the gun BEFORE you start fiddling with it or cleaning it, you're just a fucking retard.
Plain and simple.

But the story is pretty fucked up :(

Yeah, exactly. TREAT IT LIKE IT IS A REAL FUCKING GUN. I got peppered by a fully auto gun from like, 5 feet, in the back and I had a bruise that went from my ass crack to my right shoulder. Well, most of the way.

swedguy 02-29-2004 12:39 PM

OUCH, I feel for ya man. I know what it feels like... but it has only happened to me while playing :winkwink:

myjah 02-29-2004 12:43 PM

arial 02-29-2004 12:48 PM

Pretty sad the kid will never be the same again thats for sure.

I know this chick that found her dad dead on her bday. He hung himself in their living room when she was 9 and she came home and found. Although I haven't known her for too long I can tell it did some damage to her, since shes just totally fucked in the head and talks about weird relating to her dads death.

Wilbo 02-29-2004 12:51 PM

I was thinking about selling paintball guns, but I'm afraid something like this would happen and I'd get sued.

Colette Contois was not the first person to die from a paintball accident involving an ejected CO2 canister. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says it is investigating five more paintball gun incidents, including the death of a 15-year-old who was struck in the head by an ejected canister.

What I want to know is why inexperienced 10 year olds are made to break down the guns, and not experienced employees wherever this happened???

That poor kid.:(

uvort 02-29-2004 03:21 PM

thats some crazy shit :(

Joetanto 02-29-2004 03:23 PM

this is messed up. that kid is going to have to move

jmk 03-01-2004 11:17 AM

This really sucks ... I have been playing a lot of paintball and the worst i saw was people hitting the ground, sprayned ankel and stuff like that.
This kind of accident is stupid, ... and there is definitely a problem with all these youngsters, most of them have their own gun but they don't know how to properly handle it :(
But again it's up to the adults to teach them and keep an eye on it.

Sucks

Sifu 03-01-2004 11:21 AM

thats some crazy shit, poor kid , hid BD is fucken ruined for life.

I cant believe that could happen, but i feel bad for the family and also the kids that will probably never use a paintball gun again.

gornyhuy 03-01-2004 11:37 AM

hoe_vender 03-01-2004 11:56 AM
