Which is the best way to promote site growth?

It seems that many sites do not trade very productive traffic and basing that trade on productivity causes the trade to slowly wither away and die. But if you switch a trade to a "hit for hit" trade, you are sending a lot more traffic back than you are actually getting.

Any advice on the subject?

I like productivity

productivity- whats the point in getting the hit if its not productive?
