Sounds like he would have probably given your money back had you been a little more "diplomatic".

Minimouse left out over 1 hour of conversations from the ICQ
log, both discussing the intricate details of exactly what "she" would
like in her script,
and also the 3 times I offered to return all or part of the deposit.
This was after she had myself and another programmer
who had to be brought on board do many hours of work but never
once indicated that time was becoming an issue.
I indicated several times that I was willing to take care of this
whether it mean giving her the custom script at half the agreed
price, which would have left me 4 hours and $50 in the hole,
or even returning the complete deposit and having all of my time
and money go to waste. I did insist that before I throw it away and
return the deposit she do one of two things -
either answer my simple question of whether she decided
not do do the project or decided to use a different script,
OR if she would simply look at the latest version of the script
so she could see the project that she decided to cancel.
Instead "she" (he?) continued to make offensive comments
even though I was very clear that if she would just be slightly
polite long enough to look at the work I did I would gladly
refund the deposit if she decided that it wouldn't fit her needs.
Minimouse is apparently not capable of honestly discussing
the issue and I'm not going to wate time in a pissing contest,
so anyone who would like further information is free to call, email, or ICQ me.

Hmm. I'm not on anyone's side or anything, but maybe this is all a misunderstanding? I know when I make a mistake or miss a deadline for code, I generally do anything to please the customer, even giving it away for free.

In my opinion, if there wasn't a set deadline, then you can't take back the "deposit" (the purpose of the deposit is to prevent you from not paying). The script was finished, and if it worked, you should just cut the drama and take it. You don't have to do business with him again, but why be out 100 bucks and the program?

Maybe you and Ray can work out a way for him to "make it up to you" down the road (discounts, free stuff) so that everyone's satisfied. But it's not worth burning bridges left and right for a hundred bucks.

Looks like he took a couple weeks to make a custom script. How quickly did you expect it? Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

And the price...Jesus...he was worknig for pennies.
