TAMPA - Loyal 'Bubba the Love Sponge' listeners tuning in for the controversial radio show got a surprise this morning: Bubba was gone.

The radio host, whose real name is Todd Clem, was fired Monday, according to Clear Channel Radio Tampa general manager Dan DiLoreto. In Clem's place Tuesday morning was the station's standard hard rock fare.

Clem's show drew a $715,000 proposed fine from the Federal Communications Commission last month for a 2001 segment which the FCC said involved graphic and explicit talk about sex and drugs "designed to pander to, titillate, and shock listeners."

Clem was unapologetic after the FCC criticism, as he has been throughout his career. In 2001, he was charged with animal abuse after slaughtering a feral pig live on the air. He was later acquitted and continued his morning show.

CLEAR CHANNEL COMMENT
"Clear Channel radio stations WXTB Tampa, WJRR Orlando, and WPLA Jacksonville have ended their contractual relationship with the Bubba Radio Network, which provides the Bubba the Love Sponge Show.

We recognize the importance of understanding and airing content that is consistent with the standards and sensibilities of the local communities we serve.

After conducting a review of the Bubba the Love Sponge Show, we concluded the show will no longer be carried in our markets. Clear Channel Radio CEO John Hogan supports the decisions of our local managers in Florida."


Tuesday, it was hard to find many feeling sympathetic towards Clem.

"He's just rude. The kinds of things they talk about on the radio just don't need to be on the air. It's like childish, high school pranks," listener David Lange observed.

"They should have cracked down on that poor guy a long time ago, told him to shut up or go away," John Spartichino added.

Clear Channel Communications, the corporate owner of WXTB radio, issued a statement Tuesday afternoon saying the company had reviewed the show and decided to drop if from each of the three stations it airs on.

"We recognize the importance of understanding and airing content that is consistent with the standards and sensibilities of the local communities we serve," the statement read.

Clem, whose syndicated show was also carried on satellite radio, had talked about switching exclusively to satellite after the fines were proposed. His official Web site, which has since been taken offline, recently offered this preview:

"What the FCC doesn't want you to hear. Raw and uncensored. The brand new Bubba The Love Sponge Show pay per view website is coming soon. Don't miss out."

According to a sign posted on the door of his St. Petersburg home, Todd Clem plans a Wednesday news conference to discuss his plans.
