Earth Almost Put on Impact Alert. What if?

Man this is interesting shit to read, what if the president had been notified and he had to give this speech warning us all. They say it was a pretty close call and they almost called him and he would have done it. That's crazy.

liquidmoe 02-25-2004 01:50 PM

We're all going to die!!!!

tootie 02-25-2004 01:50 PM

Wow, that is pretty creepy to think about.

IPK 02-25-2004 01:50 PM

i read one of those end of the world articles once a week, when it really does come along, no one is going to believe it really is the end, until we all die at once, haha :Graucho

LadyMischief 02-25-2004 01:53 PM

Actually, earth is long overdue for some sort of impact.. It's been well over three times the normal time period between major impacts..

jact 02-25-2004 01:54 PM

Uhm.. splat.

ISUSnet 02-25-2004 01:57 PM

Damn.. and to think I woulda never known unless I was a member of GFY...crazy.

Digipimp 02-25-2004 01:57 PM

I just think it would be interesting to see, I mean they would switch to live breaking news coverage on tv and be getting live reports tracking it and where it might hit and people would be freaking out. Think how tempted they would be to predict where it might hit to give warning time, so they say it looks like it might hit near St Louis, all the people there would freak, then it might hit somewhere else and they would have to change it . Just a lot of crazy shit.

Dveron 02-25-2004 02:00 PM

Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck would save us.

KCX 02-25-2004 02:00 PM

I don't know about the rest of you but I don't think I would want to know if something like this was going to happen. Think about other peoples reactions to this situation. Do you think people would spend thier last few hours on Earth making peace with each other and doing the things they wanted to do or do you think they would loot and riot? I would bet on the looting and rioting.

:2 cents:

You hit the nail on the head... It would turn into a circus, then a movie... LOL

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 02-25-2004 02:05 PM

We done some pretty cool shit but ultimatly it is really nothing significant.
In all seriousness its somthing like this that will finish off the human race. Cuold be today, it could be tomarrow but ya know what?

We rather worry about filling our pockets with cash and kill each other than focus on humanities survival.

Wouldnt be to hard to set up some satelites with a bit of weaponry to divert this sorta disaster.

Nukes in Space do not work unless planted on the object so it can use the process that is the nature of fission.

Lasers maybe.

Who knows...

Yeah but if you read the story it's not talking about a impact so large that it would destroy everything, they were talking about a minor impact that would kill several thousand people. That's why it's scary, of course if the world was about to end they might not say, but if they were tracking and saw something might hit a certain spot and kill thousands of people they have to let everyone know.

myjah 02-25-2004 02:07 PM

and we were all just walking around oblivious. crazy

cold_ice 02-25-2004 02:09 PM

It would just be plain crazy. The whole world needs t get their heads out of their ass and make some kind of plan so maybe a few of us would live when one of these things hits.

Also to likelyhood of that rock hitting a poputated area is low; it was ever on a course for earth!
Star Trek great education!!

True.

It's weird to imagine being told the impact could happen within a 200 mile radius from where you live and it would affect everyone living within a 50 mile radius of the impact. Now you don't know if you should stay where you're at or try to leave and hope you go in the opposite direction from where the impact would occur.

Man, I need a beer!

When it happens again, and it will happen, it will send the entire planet back to the stone ages. The waves will be miles high. If you live on the coast lines you don't have a chance. The earthquakes will devaste all the major fault lines. The dust cloud generated into the atmosphere will circle the earth and completely block the sun's vital light. Planets will die. The food chain will collapse. Animals will die. Disease and famine will be everywhere. Governments will collapse. Riots and anarchy will happen everywhere. Infrastructure will all be destroyed. Fires will break out with no one to put them out. All the communications networks will be gone. There will be no oil. No electricity. Nothing manufactured. No water coming out of the pipes. Everything will be gone except for a few million people that for whatever reason were in the right place at the right time to survive. They will have to rebuild and repopulate the world again. Most will be so traumatized they'll go insane. Hopefully there will be enough smart people that will survive to provide the leadership and brainpower to do it.

There are actually several major catastrophes that are part of a cycle in earth's history that haven't occured in a long time and we are very overdue for.. We are VERY lucky :)

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 02-25-2004 02:27 PM

Not to mention that a huge impact would probably alter the earth orbit.
Thus in effect the posibility of life being extinct on earth forever is on the table as well.

But someone in the gov said if there was ever a catastrophe like that, they wouldn't let us know about it.

Now, on a brigter side of things.....

Earth warming is melting the ice caps....anyone want to make this intersting and place bets to see what gets us first? :Graucho

Rich 02-25-2004 02:32 PM

This is the most serious threat to the world IMO. It's bullshit to spend trillions exploring Mars when we don't have a way to shoot down asteroids. Fuck finding a new place for the super rich to live, let's save the place we have. It's the poor people's money they're spending.

Star Trek great education!!

true it would most likely hit the ocean causing massive title waves taking out ocean side cities all around the world

Phoenix 02-25-2004 02:47 PM

yeah if it isn't a plague or virus it will be a meteor...we need to get out into space..so we can rig up a defense plan...i dont see how it is not possible to have spider like satellites who sit dormant in space until activated...way out past mars...they could land on any meteor...clamp themselves in..and on each of their backs there would be a rocket booster of sorts..i am not sure how the forces would balance out but i dont see whay it cant be done, simple math tricks to configure the firing patterns, the mass of the meteor itself might make it impossible...hmmm back to the drawingboard

there has to be a plan that is feasible.

chappelle did an episode about something like this

tbabe 02-25-2004 11:33 PM

I would just hide in my basement

hoe_vender 02-25-2004 11:44 PM

that is something to think about

baddog 02-26-2004 12:00 AM

it would be crazy to announce it before it happened, nothing to be gained by doing that

strats 02-26-2004 12:16 AM

If it was truly going to happen, I'de announce it when they knew it was inevitable... as in they knew it was hitting earth.. and that was all there was to it.

Honestly... before the whole population wiped out,.. they just might pause and reflect on their existence all together,.. something interesting might happen.
