Content vs. Traffic

I guess with recent changes facing the big players out there, it appears there's a reason they say "Content is King."

Traffic may get the horse to water for initial signup... but traffic sure won't make the horse retain at the watering hole.:2 cents:

without traffic no sales.

As adstats showed for the upmteenth time, you don't need content to make sales.

I wonder how long that gravy train is going to last.

PPS sites are built on 1) cross sells 2) retention 3) exits

1) is very susceptible to CB regulations

3) is susceptible to popup blockers (MSIE will have one by default supposedly)

that leaves you with 2). What retains? Probably content :winkwink:

You left out 4.) Upsales, 5.) opt-ins 6.) opt-outs 7.) dhtml fly-ins etc...

;)

I'm not downplaying content, yes you need good content...but I'd much rather have traffic. After all, someone else can always worry about content...

and there are always non-adult products that often do better with adult traffic.

TRAFFIC!

Mr. Marks 02-25-2004 12:49 AM

upsells have an inverse proportion to retention.

That's exactly right, you could have the greatest content on the net, but if no one knows about it, it won't make you a cent.

You got to have extremely unique content to retain nowadays.

More and more buyers seem to follow the Pay-Wank-Cancel scheme.

OK, some just forget to cancel but, that's right.

So... my bet would be 'traffic'.

But if you have very unique content... well... I know some niche amateur sites which retain ACTIVE members for months...

eroswebmaster 02-25-2004 07:05 AM

I could be sitting here with the most unique highest quality content around but if I don't have the traffic I won't make a dime.

I could have traffic however and send it to a variety of places including my own and still make money.
