Will the Passion of the Christ be the Biggest Money Maker Of All Time?

Don't laugh..........2 Billion ppl are Christians on this planet, and many are going to get behind this movie on principle alone because of the controversy.......although I hear its incredibly violent and has an R rating.......

but I can see many Christians taking their kids to it because its about Christ.......

apparently, and this makes me mad, many churches are buying up tickets.........like there are a ton of poor, disadvantaged folks out there, but the fuckin' churches are buying tickets to a movie?

I expect this movie to do very well internationally, especially in countries that are predominantly Christian.......and lets face it, Mel is a good filmmaker, whether one believes in what he believes or not.........I mean, look at Braveheart, which was a phenomenal movie.....

Guess we'll see if it rakes in enough to put it up there with Titanic and Return of the King.........but I know it'll make a ton anyways.

:2 cents:

Not a date movie, but many religous freaks will go see it again and again to make sure they dont miss anything. This will be as big as titanic, or bigger.

But, Free, there are a lot of countries out there that are predominantely Christian.........I can see these ppl flocking to the theatres to view this movie, even if its this just to "support one of their own" mentality, the tribal mentality, similar to when synagogues were buying tickets for ppl to go see "Schindler's List"...........but of course, this is on a way more massive scale as there are so many Christians on this planet.

Guess we'll see.

Dveron 02-24-2004 07:15 PM

It'll do well but very much doubt it will even get close to Titanic. It's R rated, subtitled and doesn't have any guns and shit blowing up every 5 minutes. Plus, looking at the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes it's not even get that great critical praise.

freeadultcontent 02-24-2004 07:17 PM

Ummm when movies are counted for box office sales they ussually do not count outside US, dvd stuff, mechandising ect.

Besides there are a hell of a lot more muslims than christians and I never seen a top 10 movie out of bollywood.

freeadultcontent 02-24-2004 07:18 PM

oh yeah americans hate to read. Sub titles = a few hundred million lost.

mardigras 02-24-2004 07:19 PM

Maybe something there on repeat viewings, but Titanic and Return of the King didn't have a several week pre-booking locally.

Since it is subtitled that will make it easy to package it up for anywhere in the world.

With a decent DVD set I think it will set some home video records.

Its sitting at 54%! Wow! Not exactly the type of reviews "Return of the King" got now, are they?

Still, Mel makes good movies; Braveheart was incredible.....have to check this one out...........the R rating might be what holds it back though.......an R rated movie never made $300 Million domestically as of yet.........but I look for BIG international returns on this film, especially with all the pub its gotten.

tayloryum 02-24-2004 07:20 PM

it'll do well, but because it's so graphic, that will keep some people and kids away, so, no, will not be the all time biggest box office.

Freeadult, most movies pull in around 60% of their revenues from international sales, which have become far more impt. than domestic sales (US and Canada)........for instance, the Star Wars series does very well in N. America, not so well in the rest of the world as its more 50-50 revenue stream.........whereas Harry Potter series pulls in almost 70% of its revenues from other countries.........

I think this movie will do big bux internationally, and thats what counts even more than N. American now.......and subtitles won't hurt other countries that read subtitles or dubs anyways.

Basic_man 02-24-2004 07:26 PM

hahahahaha, you said don't laught !!

AdultNex 02-24-2004 07:28 PM

Many churches are persuading their members to watch the movie because if the movie hits a big first weekend profit, then this will create a buzz.

As a result, this will bring non-Christians to watch the movie, which is one of the main reasons why Christians want a big-hit for The Passion in its opening week.

SomeCreep 02-24-2004 07:31 PM

no

slackologist 02-24-2004 07:50 PM

no, but they should make their money back.. and then some.

Bansheelinks 02-24-2004 08:01 PM

I think some of you are underestimating how much cash this show will make.

:2 cents:

I think its going to be huge.

Bansheelinks 02-24-2004 09:15 PM

bump

has anyone who saw the showings tonite, tues., have a comment on how popular this show will be?

Odin88 02-24-2004 10:30 PM

I don't know, but some GFY'er told me some months ago that he was 'dissapointed with Gibson for making a film which has NO commercial potential whatsoever, and instead only servers to generate hate'. I should dig up the post on the forum, it would be funny.

Hit it on the fucking head w/ that one! Buy some homeless person or poor single mother and her kids a meal.

volante 02-24-2004 10:34 PM

The only way this movie will be the biggest money maker of all time is if it has Hobbits in it...

Theo 02-25-2004 01:05 AM

big,but not the biggest. Not even close.

IPK 02-25-2004 01:06 AM

yeah it won't even beat LOTR

fvurakki 02-25-2004 01:08 AM

Nope...all the people who would want to go see it are jewish :) LOL i crack myself up!

Buff 02-25-2004 02:22 AM

I am going on record as saying it will double Titanic at least.

am i missing something?

Quatermain 02-25-2004 03:45 AM

There is Passion of the Christ Jesus figures at the local McDonald's.

kane 02-25-2004 03:53 AM

all the controversy alone will drive people to the box office. It will do well but it won't be the biggest movie ever.

it has subtitles and that kills most movies in america.

it's religous and many won't see it beacuse they will feel like they are being preached at.

it's a bible story, everyone knows how it ends. there is no surprise.

I predict it will be big the first couple of weeks and then slowly die off. LOTR had people camped out at almost every theatre for tickets. I haven't seen anyone in line for this movie.

Krille 02-25-2004 03:55 AM

never heard of that movie

Bansheelinks 02-26-2004 03:01 PM

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pag...fthechrist.htm

Set a record for a weekday, non-holiday already.........

Total as of Feb. 25, 2004: $26,556,573

By tomorrow, it will have made its cost back, and thats just domestic.........wait til it goes int'l in all those predominately Christian countries

Stay tuned...........

stev0 02-26-2004 03:04 PM

i'll wait to see what the gross profits of the paris hilton sex video are... im guessing it will have made more overall :) that is if we count all the illegal sales of it.

kane 02-26-2004 07:12 PM

just say today that return of the king has made 1 billion world wide. . . passion has a ways to go.

Bansheelinks 02-26-2004 08:57 PM

True enough, but even ROTK never had advance pub like this show has...........nor the Christian community galvanized, worldwide, behind it..............no show really has had anything like that yet so lets see how it plays out internationally.......

Jace 02-26-2004 09:01 PM

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/article...040225potc.htm

it will break tons of records, it is already in the top 10 best wednesday openings.

Bansheelinks 02-26-2004 09:05 PM

Well, only 2 films in cinema history have gone over $1 Billion US..........

Titanic and

just recently, Return of the King.........

......with constant international Christian support, I am wondering if this will be the third? That may be a shame, because maybe it is merely a good movie, not something outstanding like "Return of the King" is.................if the idiotic churches keep buying tickets, who knows?

I still think the Christian countries like Italy, France etc are going to lap it up...........

Double the Titanic? Hmmm, I know people who watch the freaking movie 3-5 times.

Bansheelinks 02-26-2004 09:40 PM

It won't be doubling Titanic..........

that is just looney tunes speculation........

not a chance

Sausage 02-26-2004 09:47 PM

Wow ... saw part of the movie and it's certianly bold !
Think they have done a good job, and it will certianly keep people talking .... and as we know that means more people will see it.

I know many non christians who are flocking to see it.

I know the Lord of the Rings is the biggest money making trilogy of all time, and the first two shows as lead-ins are a huge push for ROTK, but really, this advanced pub for "The Passion" has been ridiculous, featured on CBS Evening News, etc etc
