Yahoo Directory - Is it worth it ?
Lately Ive been on a Search Engine kick. I want their traffic (who doesnt). Anyway, Ive been thinking of things to try to get more, and eventually got to directories. My first 2 targets are dmoz and yahoo.
Dmoz is free if you can get listed so why not take a shot at it. Yahoo, on the other hand, has that $600/yr price tag for adult sites. The $600 price tag doesnt even guarantee inclusion ! Then you read the agreement and its like, if we say no, you lost your $600. WTF. :321GFY So the questions are, has anyone paid up and been rejected ? If you have been included, did you see any significant changes to Search Engine Traffic, or Google PR ? Is it worth the chance of throwing away $600 ? Anyone, know of any other good directories to get into ? |
Good luck on dmoz, 3 years and counting.

The Yahoo paid inclusion is a rip-off.

Paid inclusion is indeed a rip off. Why pay?
In a short time they are going to realize that they can not compete with google using such methods. Remember what happened to the last Yahoo paid inclusion program? |
I was thinking the yahoo directory listing would carry some weight with the googlebot, and get me a little boost in pr, resulting in increased traffic from both google and yahoo (and everyone else that uses google).
It does seem a little fucked up that they charge double for adult sites ! Guess they figure adult webmasters can swing. Free is for me, Yahoo can go :321GFY itself |
Before I'd do paid inclusion, I'd start a yahoo group. Have you ever looked for porn on the yahoo network?
All the porn + all the crappy sites = surely these people aren't paying for inclusion?! Fyrflygrl |

I can sell you 200+ sites listed, for cheeeeep. Right now they are not worth the hosting even. There is a small chance they might go back to the directory being favoured, but I doubt it.

One plus, you'll likely have a captive audience. I have only approved 1 message from someone other than me for a couple of months now at either of the groups I moderate. It's not because I'm being a hardass, it's just those that have hit my group for free advertising couldn't a follow simple and most fair rule; every post to advertise a website must contain a pic or a link to a gallery. Some people could save a LOT of time checking to see which moderators are actually posting their messages. I'd say 98% of the (spam) posts to a gay group I moderate are for straight porn or straight dating sites. As far as Yahoo, they aren't going to let themselves get behind Google for relevant search results or it would be their death knoll. Therefore, make sure all new pages you create are linked with pages already in either search engine and you'll eventually be listed in both. I generally don't bother submitting directly to DMOZ, unless you know someone you'll be waiting a lot longer than catching the spider. |
