'People should use trees to commit suicide instead of trains'

People with suicidal tendencies in Botswana have been asked to throw themselves out of trees instead of in front of trains.

The country's Minister for Works and Transport, Tebelelo Seretse, has advised people to use trees instead.

She made the plea in a newspaper based in the capital Gaborone.

"I am appealing to the people not to use the trains to kill themselves. If people want to commit suicide they should use trees not our trains," she said.

"I am sick of these people who throw themselves in front of the trains. The drivers are people - why turn them into murderers?"

She has offered counselling to drivers who have to dealt with suicides, says the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

Why not offer them suicide counselling instead? heh.

i was talking to a security guard at a train station a couple of months back, she said it happens fairly often here, but it is never on the news or anything. she told me how all the guards had to go around picking up the pieces.

Last week in South Florida 3 people laid down on train tracks and got killed.

Fucking weird way to want to die if you ask me.

Difficult to find trees in many parts of Botswana, it's semi-desert apart from up in the north. And the ones that are there aren't very high...you'll be lucky to hurt more than your feelings, falling from a 10-foot-high tree. That's if you can get up an acacia in the first place...they aren't called camel-thorn-trees for nothing :1orglaugh

I have witnessed a person going under a train. A piece of leg came through with the shoe still attached- Shit - I can still see it now in my minds eye - An awfull mess.
Never want to see anything like that again.

I knew someone that killed himself like that, I could never imagine what could make some one want to go out like that..

it happens frequently here too...my husband used to drive a train and he once hit an already dead body (guy had killed himself on the third rail) and even just that gives him flashbacks.

Should have taken pictures - people pay big money for stuff like that. LOL

I am not quite that sick....

I am only guessing here, but maybe they think it would be an instant painless death.
