are you really looking for "the best"? Or you looking for good bang for the buck?
my Compaq kicks ass. Decent price. Never a single hardware or OS/Software failure to date. Solid as a rock, packed with features and functionality, and powerful enough that I bagged the desktop system and replaced it with this. :2 cents: |
I've got a Panasonic Toughbook and it's been lugged around many airports without fail, it's great (but it wasn't cheap).

Toshiba M35

Baught a Toshiba LapTop last year. A "Pro" series. Within 7 months, the HD, motherboard and powersuply blew up. About a week ago, the second HD went up in smoke. The thing (P4 1.6) ran slow as a mofo and after 1 hour of use I could not keep it on my lap, it got too hot.
I recently replaced it with an IBM R40 (R50 Us model) with Centrino technology. I aslo purcahsed a 3year in house warrenty. The IBM cost me about $150 more than that piece of shit Toshiba. Ray |
I have had many laptops over the years. My old Compaq transportable was not what you would call a laptop, being as large as most mid-towers and sporting a 5" CRT, it weighed a ton, and didn't work without 110V.
My DEC (now owned by Compaq) was a sweet little unit, cost me a fortune, and I traded it off far too soon to justify the cash outlay. My first two 'econo' laptops were Acers, and they were decent units, but anything they have made in the last six years have been cheap garbage that breaks too easily. I've been through two, and two other friends makes too high of a failure rate for me. I have had three Toshibas, and they were all tough as nails. Even their new ones are good, although I couldn't quite justify the huge $tag for a ToughBook sub-notebook. $2200CAD for an 800MHz processor couldn't come close to the $1200 for the Avaratec (formerly Sotec) 3150 that I picked up a few months ago. Smaller and lighter than most (13" wide, 1.5" tall, and 4 pounds), 1.6GHz with a 30GB hard drive and a DVD/CDRW in a magnesium alloy casing gave me everything I wanted, for half the price of any other competitor, and much less size and bulk. When it comes right down to it, my laptop is still a convenience that allows me to work from anywhere (the 802.11 wireless is nice, too), plays mp3s through my car stereo with an FM wireless transmitter effortlessly, while simultaneously compressing video while I travel. The built-in LAN and 56K modem allow me to have Internet access anywhere I go (also supports cellphone attachments), and it's light enough to throw into my backpack and carry to the top of a mountain so that I can download my digital pictures. I still rely on my main machines for the heavy processing that I need, but it's damn convenient that I can take some big jobs on the road to get things done, and still be able to chill out with a few beers and a DVD. Jere. |
If you check around at the newsgroups and forums, you will find that most think IBM has made the best laptops over the years, though not sure about the last year or so. Although it really does come down to personal preference, there is a reason why so many have paid the extra money they cost. Toshiba is probably still one of the best brands for the money.

I just ordered a Sager 8890-V last night.
16" screen, P4 3.2 GHz, 1 gig of ram, TV IN, DVD/CDRW, 60 GB 7200 RPM hd, car adapter, and all the other normal shit. My friend has one and it has been great for him. Now I just have to wait 2-3 weeks for the 16" screen. |
