Is hotlinking illegal, get you sued? Whats the deal?

I haven't done it nor do I intend to do it, but is it illegal or are they just a little bitch for hotlinking?

I'd say its bad to hotlink and put someones images on your site.

Posting pics from google images on the board isnt all that bad...

I'm not sure about the legality. IANAL, but sounds like plain old theft to me...
