Interesting cancer funding stats...

I wonder when the men in this country are going to get off their asses and do something about this inequity...

"Breast cancer research will receive about $870 million next year. Compare that to $485 million for prostate cancer research."

Interesting when you look at some additional numbers:

Breast cancer deaths (per 100,000): 27.9
Prostate cancer deaths (per 100,000): 32.0

Don't even get me started on HIV/AIDS spending.

National Prostate Cancer Coalition
Healthy People

Remember that guys next time someone tries to corner you into donating for breast cancer research....

You're on the wrong board, man.

What are the figures for HIV/AIDS research?

"The United States invests approximately $16,700 to find a cure for each life lost to prostate cancer; more than $21,800 for each life lost to breast cancer, and about $160,000 for each life lost to AIDS."

lol.. I *guarantee* you that statement was created by an organization wanting more prostate cancer research money.

They intentionally try to make it sound like they spend billions on AIDS research... and not very much on breast or prostate cancer research.

But how many people die annually of each? And are they counting worldwide? Or only in the nation?

I hate organizations who fudge stats in this way.

Have a url for the reference of that statement?

Of course it was. :winkwink:

While I didn't see the underlying data but it is safe to assume that they are counting US only deaths. I really have no problem with that though as it's a comparison of US research funding to US deaths.

I don't know if I'd call that fudging the stats, but you correctly point out that those numbers would shift drastically if based on worldwide numbers.

The amount of worlds medial R&D budget the the US should pay is another subject all together IMO.

I take it you didn't click the links. :winkwink:

The whole point was not really to get into an HIV funding debate... just give some cancer numbers. I actually wish I'd left the HIV/AIDS comment out.

I know where my past breast cancer donations will be going in the future.

Sure...

But they sure don't. The HIV/AIDS stat is their main hook see?

"Everyone" suffers from prostate & breast cancer...

Where as most of the nation thinks that HIV/AIDS is a disease that mostly effects Gay people, Black people, and drug users.... not them.

So when they glance at that stat, they are decived into thinking that research funding for HIV/AIDS is nearly 10 times that of prostate or breast cancer -- and that makes them mad

But notice that they said "$x per death"

Now give me the stats on HOW MANY people died from HIV/AIDS Vs. Prostate and breast cancer last year and multiply it by those numbers.

Then you will see the truth in how much money is spent where.

goBigtime 02-18-2004 08:48 AM

STatistics are funny....

Whoever said "statistics don't lie"
- Paid for their statistical outcome/wording.
