A second strain of mad cow disease has been discovered, a development doctors say points to the need for more testing of cattle in North America and also raises the concern that more people than previously thought may be getting the human form of the fatal brain disorder.
The new strain bears a striking similarity to sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a related human brain disorder, which occurs for unknown reasons and kills about 300 people in the United States each year, according to the Italian researchers whose work appears today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
