Plugging your pagerank holes!

OK bishes. Some people say pagerank is not important.
Its not everything but it is important for a quality SE campaign. Even if it only has a SMALL effect on your rankings, we all know how valuable targeted SE traffic is and that any steps to ensure higher search engine placement should be taken.

one of the things some people don't realize is that your affiliate links are pagerank leaks. Your sponsors don't link back to you so why would you want to waste pagerank on your affiliate code. (even if its an SE friendly affil. code chances are its not going to be listed because the page will be marked as a duplicate)

Hiding your links using javascript/php/asp is a decent solution and google will will pass over links obfuscated by java or a script written to detect bots and deliver dynamic content to them. Some people use this to cloak entire pages, which can get you penalized if caught, but cloaking your pagerank leaks its far less likely any SE is going to penalize you.

Remember to link back to your main page from as many of your web sites pages as possible and remember to plug all their PR holes too!

Technically the more content pages your site has the more overall pagerank your site has, and if you properly funnel your pagerank back to the main page and obfuscate your outbound links you can benefit a lot.

However, linking EVERY page to EVERY other page is not recommended because then the flow of PR is not directed and you will end up with a lot of mediocre PR pages instead of one high PR main page. (unleess your goal is spreading your PR out evenly across your entire site.)

Another thing to keep in mind that all PR 6 sites are not the same even though your Google toolbar displays them as such.
Google has not released offical information as to how many sections PR is devided into, but a page with a rank of 6.6 will definatly have an avantage over a site with a rank of 6.1 even though the google toolbar will display them as having the same pagerank number.

Heres a usefull too to play around with to help you understand the flow of pagerank.

heres a cool setup to get a PR4 with NO inbound links! (remember that every site must actually be listed in google before it obtaind the base .15PR, and every time pagerank is calculated the "slate is wiped clean" so technically it would be impossible to achive a PR4 with out a single inbound link.)

Jesus H Christ, dont start cluttering GFY with actual useful info damnit :P

Very nice post and dead on the money.

Every page linking to you leaks some PR to your pages, everyone you link to does the same for there pages. As Jesus said, j avascript links are a damn good way to stop that, even if you have the full url in the j avascript.

Jesus: glad to see you like phils calculator :)

Somthing to add about outgoing links not ALWAYS being a drain.

Quote:

Google (and other search engines) value outgoing links particular if the "linked to" page is of the same topic as the page being linked. More importantly, your visitors will benefit from such links. If these outgoing links are to an authority site (a trusted source of information e.g. NASA website for the topic of space) you stand an enormous chance of gaining far more than you lose.

To appreciate how outgoing links can assist your site's ranked position one must look beyond "my site" and the site (page) being linked to in order to see the bigger picture. PageRank transfers not just to the "linked to" page (this so-called PageRank drain) but all subsequent links down an endless link path and not just a single path but also millions of endless new link paths as you move further away from your own website.

I agree, it's not profound and it's there for the searching but it's pointless to post it here where every idiot will see it... it just clutters the market that little bit more.

cosis 04-14-2004 11:15 AM

thanks for this old tip - starting to see results now

That's why I stay out of these threads. As soon as an SEO says this is great info, everyone copies it :)

With that, I will say nothing more in this thread :)

Actually this information about hiding links in java script is incorrect.
Google can parse java script now and does so.
Also I have created traffic from using affiliate links to rank in google and Yahoo. If your sponsor has search engine friendly text then you can outrank your sponsors for keywords on their site.

Anyhahahaha looking at google and yahoo cannot fail to see affiliate links ranking for good keywords.:2 cents:

The rest of the post is great though!:thumbsup
