Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 - I made the switch

I made the switch from outlook to mozilla thunderbird email client and i must say i will never go back to outlook again.

This is the best email client i have used yet.

zeebee 02-17-2004 01:09 AM

100% Agree!!

Im also using it!

greentea 02-17-2004 01:12 AM

The only thing i dont like about it is the built in spell checker, it lacks somewhat.

Dirty F 02-17-2004 01:14 AM

Cool...downloading now.

zeebee 02-17-2004 01:19 AM

uh huh! That is why i love this program so much, It trains it self to detect spam and then deal with it, no other email client can filter spam as good as this.

johnbosh 02-17-2004 01:23 AM

gonna try it

unitedpimps jrock 02-17-2004 01:23 AM

damm sounds good....i'll have to check it out.

Alky 02-17-2004 01:28 AM

can you minimize it to the systray?

4Pics 02-17-2004 02:17 AM

why is it better? other then the spam stuff that mailwasher deals with?

JDog 02-17-2004 02:20 AM

Fuck yea man! I've been using Mozilla full time for about a year! Only thing I use IE for is AutoGallery SQL, Mozilla doesn't seem to like the thumbnail thingy!

Digipimp 02-17-2004 02:22 AM

There are a lot of email exploits that specifically work with lookout express (and to a lesser extent outlook), it's crap.

Mozilla rocks! :thumbsup

beemk 02-17-2004 04:09 AM

be careful when 'training it' against mydoom emails. You'll wind up sending some of your contacts into the spam filter.

See thunderbird forums for more details.

greentea 02-17-2004 04:31 AM

download it off this page, that i dont think is it

http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/download.html

Mail for OSX Panther would cost me over $3000 though.

cluck 02-17-2004 04:32 AM

I still have the first public beta version installed and that alone has worked perfectly for months. I should really upgrade it. Fucking great client :2 cents:

thanks, no problems so far. Out of about 150 emails so far since installation, the spam filter made one error and moved a legit email into the junk box. Impressive so far.

beemk 02-17-2004 04:40 AM

how do you import emails?

greentea 02-17-2004 04:41 AM

Look under tools, you should see an import button.

How much do you think M$ paid for that review? They rate LookOut as better than The Bat, they don't mention Thunderbird, and they don't mention Ximian Evolution (which is really the most kick ass client ever).

Just for that, it worths a try, i'm going to download it today. What about Outlook 2003? seems it has a spam filter too.

Most mail programs including outlook have filters, but this one 'trains' itself. I have not even toyed with the spam filter on this much other then to activate it and watch it do it's work.

This blows away outlook, outlook express.

SubSonic 02-17-2004 06:08 AM

I am using the Opera integrated mail client. It's also great and way better than Outlook.

Ok, i can't compare the firebird client with the opera client because i never used firebird.

:2 cents:

Rorschach 02-17-2004 06:11 AM

Firebird and Thunderbird are two separate apps whereas Opera is integrated. The Opera mail client is pretty cool too though.

beemk 02-17-2004 06:59 AM

i got it all installed now. how does the spam filter exactly work?

jimmyf 02-17-2004 07:21 AM

I'v never used outlook, use Netscape for mail, for surfing IE and Mozilla sometimes Netscape. Outlook is 100% crap always has been .

dunefield 02-17-2004 09:17 AM

yeah i made the transition today... i love it... :thumbsup

candyflip 02-17-2004 09:20 AM

I posted the link for someone yesterday. I switched to Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird last week and will never touch IE or that piece of shit Outlook ever again.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

myneid 02-17-2004 11:13 AM

I'm a hardcore mozilla supporter. i use firefox as my default browser and have for some time now (under a different name of course).
the new stuff they are doing is revolutionary.

but outlook 2003 kicks ass. i actually like it better than thunderbird. now thunderbird is much better than the older versions of outlook and definately better than outlook express.
and speaking of which
STOP USING OUTLOOK EXPRESS!!!!
it's the worst email program that there is.
if you are using OE please install thunderbird right now!

loverboy 02-17-2004 11:27 AM

moved from Outlook to Netscape a couple of months ago after geting 200+ spams a day....im never going back using Microsoft craps. if i only knew about Thunderbird much earlier, i could be using it right now. too bad, im now more satisfied Netscape user from browser to mail email client.

Netscape's spam filter is another great feature why i wont use any other programs.

im sure this will be an end of SPAMs with much better softwares FREE for all.

tonkagunner 02-17-2004 12:28 PM

Have any of you tried Outlook 2003?

salo18 02-17-2004 01:32 PM

Thunderbird didnt work for me for some reason, I tried Foxmail and its good. :)

tonkagunner 02-17-2004 03:17 PM

I see a name change coming. Mozilla Firebird changed to Firefly. Pontiac may not like Thunderbird name.

it's already changed - it's called firefox now.

i haven't decided wether or not to stay with outlook or switch totally to thunderbird. but i'm definitely very pleased with the thunderbird product.

Trax 02-17-2004 03:32 PM

ok
i downloaded it
run it

and closed it again

my office outlook 2003 is much nicer
never had a problem with it either..... so......

tonkagunner 02-17-2004 03:44 PM

I ended up switching back to Outlook Express. I have lots of different email accts and Thunderbird was listing them all independently with their own inboxes and sent folders.

shakta 02-17-2004 04:30 PM

just switched back from Thunderbird (using it since months) to Netscape 7.1

why you ask me?

- netscape has the same self-training junk filters too (maybe Mozilla has better ones since 7.1 is a lot older)
- i was using around a dozen accounts with Thunderbird and some thousands of email, and it was sloooow .... and everyday Thunderbird became slower and slower, now i imported all my mails into Netscape and it's 5x faster.

Don;t know why, perhaps "Thunderbird is a technology preview only" should be taken into consideration.

Anyway if you use it (for some hundreds of messages it's ok) then go for the Smoke for OSX skin, it rocks ! :thumbsup
