New scholarship created for whites only

BRISTOL, Rhode Island (AP) -- A student group at Roger Williams University is offering a new scholarship for which only white students are eligible, a move they say is designed to protest affirmative action.

The application for the $250 award requires an essay on "why you are proud of your white heritage" and a recent picture to "confirm whiteness."

"Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants," says the application, issued by the university's College Republicans.

Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships.

"We think that if you want to treat someone according to character and how well they achieve academically, then skin color shouldn't really be an option," he said. "Many people think that coming from a white background you're automatically privileged, you're automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That's just not the case."

The stunt has angered some at the university, but the administration is staying out of the fray. The school's provost said it is a student group's initiative and is not endorsed by Roger Williams.

Mattera, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is himself a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship open only to a minority group.

"No matter what my ethnicity is, I'm making a statement that scholarships should be given out based on merit and need," Mattera told the Providence Journal.

His group took out a full-page ad in last week's issue of the university's student newspaper to tout the scholarship, which was for $50 until two donors came forward to add $100 each during the weekend, Mattera said.

It's not the first brush with controversy for the group. The school temporarily froze the Republicans' money in the fall during a fight over a series of articles published in its monthly newsletter. One article alleged that a gay-rights group indoctrinates students into homosexual sex.

I also read a story about another College Republican's club had like a bake sale. They based the price's on cupcakes according to the customer's race. The whites were charged the lowest and Asians were charged the highest prices.

There are plenty of ethnic only scholarships...tons of Jewish, Italian immigrant, Religious, and even Gay based scholarships etc...

There are lots of "black" public colleges and universities in the south, b/c the state governments wouldn't allow blacks to ATTEND white schools until the 1960s. You know the whole separate but equal thing. You know folks like Strom Thummond :1orglaugh

Most southern university systems are gradually shutting down the public HBCUs, ironically most of hbcus still in existence have quite a few white students.

When i was in High School i read this big ass book on different scholorships to apply for. There was scholorship for everything you could of imagined. Their was even for Left Handed students only, lol

YIPPIE! That's what I was gonna start! But it's gonna cause some problems! And I don't care, why can't just whites have a scholarship fund just for them! Kudos to the creators!

I read about that earlier too. It's an interesting statement, I'd be curious if any political / minority leaders say it's wrong.

I agree, even if you're white, doesn't mean you're priviledged, I had a tougher time because my father made decent money (still blue collar worker) but I never saw a dime of it. As a joke, I asked him about my college fund (every once in a while he'd mention something about this) when I was getting ready for college. There was nothing. He paid room and board for the first two years (I lived at home), that's it.

Minority scholarships are still a good idea because ethnic polarization is still a huge problem, especially in america.

Few years ago, a buddy of mine won the IBM Canada scholarship for $20,000. There were three categories: male, female, and disabled student. He applied as a disabled student, because a few years earlier he registered under the school districts disabled student program due to messy handwriting and hand fatigue (doctors approved it and everything).

Here's an idea

Scholarships should have nothing to do with how light or dark your skin is, Black or White, there shouldn't be one until the majority of our nation can live with opposite races in open harmony and comfort

Black month needs to disapeer, White month needs to not be created

How about Unity month? Isn't that a better idea?

It seems to me African Americans these days were born into an equal opportunity country, They are not any more special than JoeBob the Puerto Rican Italian from Wyoming.
