One of the world's most famous showbiz couples are splitting up.Barbie and Ken and calling it a day after 43 years together because the pair want some "quality time" apart.Like all showbiz pairings, a spokesman for the couple said they were finding it hard to live their love lives in the glare of the media spotlight.

And there was the question of Ken's commitment - he is reported to be reluctant to tie the knot.

But the couple's "business manager" stressed the two would "remain friends".

Russell Arons, vice president of marketing at Mattel, said that Barbie and Ken "feel it's time to spend some quality time - apart".

"Like other celebrity couples, their Hollywood romance has come to an end.

The split comes as Cali Girl - short for Californian girl - hits the stores.

She already has the attention of a hunky Australian surfer called Blaine.

But no one else is believed to be involved in the split.

Barbie - the most popular fashion doll in the world, according to toy maker Mattel - met Ken on the set of a TV commercial in 1961.

Since then, they have entertained millions of children across the world.

The doll is marketed in 150 countries.

Mattel claims that three Barbie dolls are sold somewhere in the world every second.

haha...but when I was in high school they came out with the first ken to have non-molded hair and he had an earring in the 'wrong' ear. They pulled it from the shelf but it became a big collectors item.

In my house barbie was always 'married' to the micheal jackson doll.
