Would you tell your children?

Had an interesting discussion with my fiancee about what we would tell our children, when the time comes, about our line of work. Would you want them to follow in your footsteps? Would you try to hide it from them as much as you can? I know we have alot of parents on GFY so it'd be interesting to hear how you dealt with it.

would never tell them. Furthermore, it has no connection whatsoever what I really/mainly do at this moment, and the only thing I will do at the time I have children, which is one of the best respected jobs I could have. So: no

That's cool..I'm also planning on getting involved in more 'mainstream' businesses as well which will hopefully do well. If anything, it's good to diversify anyways..

When the time comes I would say everything, it is not a secret, we are in 2004

Herb Kornfield 02-12-2004 01:32 PM

I tell them that I work in the internet, thats all.

They could care less and I keep my shit all under lock and key here at the house. No one knows what I do and the kids just do their thing.

Ross 02-12-2004 01:34 PM

I'm only 20 years old. Far too young to be worrying about something like that.

If I was older and had kids, I think I'd be very hesitant to tell them. By the time they get older and start asking questions anyway I would hope to be out the business.

I agree..but would you want them to do what you do professionally, not morally. Like if your son/daughter said 'I want to work in your company' or 'start my own adult biz', ect..

bullshit dude

why should i cause my own kids problems
i won't tell them

okny 02-12-2004 01:36 PM

Hmmmm not planning to have children anytime soon but i wouldn't tell them exactly what i do but would explain that it has to deal with net and hopefully retire buy the time they get old enough to understand.

hydro 02-12-2004 01:38 PM

i would tell them but not at a young age, i think a good time to tell them is when they are about 20 or so. But chances are that if they use the same computer you do or get on your computer they would find out.

Adult Site Traffic 02-12-2004 01:40 PM

They already know, but my youngest is 15.

We sorta have a "don't ask don't tell" policy. They don't even walk in the office.

zzgundamnzz 02-12-2004 01:41 PM

I'd tell them the truth. "I make websites".

Diversity Fade,

Buy property and rent it out. Buy some business's run those while this stuff makes you money in the back end. :)

I have two sons ages 13 and 14 years old. They have no clue what I do in the business.

I have been working in this business now for over 6 years and have kept it safely away from them. I will tell them when they are 18 :)

just a punk 02-12-2004 01:53 PM

Our son is 9 y.o. and he knows we do Web design and that's all. BTW, we also do lots of mainstream (non-adult) design so we always have something to show.

SykkBoy 02-12-2004 02:29 PM

I believe all information should be age appropriate. My kids just know that I work with computers. I also keep some mainstream stuff for when their teachers start asking too many questions (actually, the ebook business is doing nicely now).

I try to be very concious of not being "the embarassing dad" to my kids. I keep a low local profile and keep conversation about things adult to a minimum.

They do know that sometimes dad works with "boobs and butts" but nothing more.

RP Fade 02-12-2004 02:40 PM

It's kinda funny..when people ask you what you do and you reply vaguely 'internet business' or whatever, do you get alot of 'are you in porn?'

I must have one of those smut peddler looks :1orglaugh

I wish I could get my son interested in what we do. We could use the extra set of hands.

He's 20 and capable, just not interested.

We shielded him when he was fourteen; but, by the time he was sixteen, he figured it out.

I'm not ashamed of what we do and neither is he. It pays the bills and allows me to be home.

TweetyBird 02-12-2004 02:42 PM

hehe :1orglaugh

axelcat 02-12-2004 02:44 PM

What she said :)

But they're smart... they'll figure it out first...

How many of you think your kids have searched for your username, if they know it?

My kids are only 6, 9 and 10... all boys, so T&A will be oh-so fascinating for them when the testosterone starts dripping... :helpme

I wouldn't tell them the exact details, just a broad "internet marketing" will do
