VCR is dead... Long live DVD (story)

Quote:

...This week Philips, the huge Dutch electronics company that invented the cassette and technology that led to the CD and DVD, announced the closure of its remaining VCR production lines.

Philips conceded the decision would cost it sales. People were comfortable with the technology, a spokesman said, but Philips believed it had reached its use-by date. Unstated but doubtlessly a factor, profit margins on VCRs, as with PCs, are probably now too thin to be attractive.
What do you think? Will still people rent porn on VHS or DVD?

I think it's a good thing we move towards DVDs - better quality, the ability to put "Xtras" and specials, last virtually forever, and best of all cost only a PENNY when printed in large quantities.

I'm amazed at the price of dvds at times.
I remember when new vHS movies would run you like $75-$80.

And then years later after things settled down a bit I still remember when it was a great deal to find a new vhs tape for $9.99....anyway the point I'm getting at is you can always find new DVD's at Best Buy every Tuesday...new released for $15.95 and you get so much more.

They just had this last week a bunch of double disc special edition dvd's for 2 for $30. I picked up Fight Club, Planet Of The Apes, Independence Day, Alien, Sound of Music, Someting About Mary...all double disc special editions.

I see decent movies for sale all the time on vhs for like$3.99 or $5.99 but then come across the dvds for $7.99...I wouldn't touch a vhs anymore.

What I mean was that DVD is much better for distrubution ...

I checked last night, you can print 1000 DVDs with full-color jackets for just $1400. That means a DVD will cost you next to nothing to produce and it's durable and can be shipped very cheaply and easily.

Yeah that too ;)

You can also start small by just burning your own dvd's in house and work up to a larger production like that.

I know of a few companies who do their own.

So for like $2000, I can produce the content and shell out 500 DVDs (did I mention the replication guys throw in some 300 FREE posters). I could sell them for $1 and charge $9.95 for shipping and handling lol and I'll still break even (on the first lot).

Burning DVDs on a burner off your PC is not too reliable. Firstly, not all DVD Players will be able to read the disc. Secondly, not a huge factor for a porn site, but DVD burners on PC are one-sided. "Real" DVDs are 2-sided. Better to do it professionally.

Fine with me, we started buying DVDs 5 years ago, we've now successfully migrated to DVD and got all the movies we had on VHS on DVD, and replaced all the kid's movies on it.. we got the kids a dvd player too. Much better media, I think.

yes VHS is surely dying, DVD is superior in almost every way. i wonder how long till the next level of technology comes out

KraZ 02-12-2004 08:43 AM

LadyMischief,

Should I send you a copy of the limited-run, special edition, director's cut DVD that I'm dying to produce?

Only if you promise your kids wont see it of course :winkwink:

Regular VCR's are dead...but what about D-VHS? Currently superior to DVD, just not many have it yet.
