GL2? VX2100? Others?

I love my XM2, but going to get something NTSC and although i got my finger on the buy button on bhphotovideo for the GL2, i figured id sleep on it and maybe get some opinions.

any opinions are appreciated, just want to stick to minidv, stay away from humongous shit like xl1's i prefer the ability to take cam in hand. thanks!

Mikey

Hi Mikey,

I've worked with the XM2 and it SUCKS compared to the Sony. I know I'm probably biased [just a bit] but I liked the Sony much better. The 2100 seems like perfection itself. Unless of course you need some 30 frames of progressive video...

Today I was looking at Panasonic DVX100a - a new & improved model that supports a variety of frame rates but the price is a bit higher (about ~3500 USD).

I'll still get the VX2100 :)

Manowar 02-11-2004 10:39 AM

the sony VX series is the best IMHO

Keev 02-11-2004 10:41 AM

God that is gorgeous!

Sony VX2100....Hands down.

emmanuelle 02-11-2004 10:57 AM

I hear great things about the Sony.

The xl1 is nice, but we find that it intimidates people, which is not good in certain shooting situations.

I had a VX1000 for years and toyed with the VX2000 but was sold on the GL2.

It's low light recording is simply un-fucking-real! I don't even want to touch my vx2000's anymore

I also LOVE the feel of the body..:thumbsup

I have seen a WIDE variety of prices on the DCR-VX2100. What is a realistic price for one?

Ricky Dynamite 02-11-2004 11:33 AM

The Panasonic DVX100 is god for 24p recording.

Why anyone would want the GL2 with 1/4 " ccds when the vx's have 1/3" ccds is beyond me.

i started with xl1s and have all canon accessories (batteries, wide angle adapter, etc.) ...

I do want to maybe get the sony tho ... just would like to know if it can shoot non interlaced. I prefer the 25 fps progressive mode but gotta get an ntsc cam.

Shit even dvd is compressed to high heaven from the source ... cant be that big of a damn difference the size of the ccds can it (to the final product - be it dvd or web) if im lighting properly???

i dunno ... thats why im asking :)

Thanks any other replies appreciated. I dont want to know if you havent used both, no offense ... im not asking how cool you think your sony is, but really ... am i really fucking up getting the GL2 and why ... this XM2 of mine has filmed some mighty fine smut ...

this is the place to buy...

I have the vx2100 and it's very pro cam... you can shoot anything with it... the shots are crystal clear in any light.. it has built in filters.... and when used wth a filter it just enhances everything... I went to the shark tank the other day here and shot some stuff.. fucking amazing... I will post some of it in a few....

KraZ 02-12-2004 02:30 AM

To summarize:

Best VIDEO cam: Sony VX2100, amazing chip, amazing low light, handles perfectly for this type of work (ask Anabolic). The only drawback is the progressive scan (it's not going to 30 fps as the GL2).

Best DVD/Cine cam: Panasonic DVX100a: good chip, good low light, pro sound (XLR), a variety of frame rates: 60i, 30 fps, 24 fps...

Best HD Cam: JVC GR-HD10 ... full high definition 720x1280 picture at a progressive 30 frames per second. Who cares about chip and low light when you can brag you shoot porn for HDTVs :)

i want my guys to look at the Panasonic for that 24p mode, supposed to look like film. It's more expensive than the VX 2000 but not by that much, it's 3,000 though there is model about that one for 3500.

i think shooting gonzo in 24p might be a mistake, gonzo should look as real as possible, giving gonzo a film look might not be a good idea. i have to check out the stuff Quasarman has shot for Zero Tolerance, he uses the Panasonic at 24p.

KraZ 02-12-2004 02:51 AM

Another consideration - price ... Canon had a $250 rebate on the Canon GL2 for like a whole year but I think it is no more.

So the price of the GL2 is now $250 closer to that of the Sony VX2000/VX2100...

The differnce in price is quite dramatic actually. Sony VX2100 is $2,200 while Panasonic DVX100a is $3,200 (Source: PriceGrabber). That's 30% more.

Also, 24p means quick action won't look too good. Have you noticed how quick pans or tilts at 24p become jagged and blurry? I think Gonzo style is meant to be shot at 60i. 24p is for aspiring (stupid) wannabe filmmakers who think they'll be able to blow it to 35 mm...
