Buying an LCD monitor, which one?

What do you look for in LCD monitor specs?

Is a 600:1 contrast ratio better than a 300:1?

Whats a good Luminance?

Refresh rates?

I'm so confused! :helpme

B40 02-10-2004 03:51 PM

Higher contrast is better....lower response time is better as well..

Look for something > 500:1 contrast and < 20ms response time

lurking 02-10-2004 03:52 PM

whatever you do, do not buy a NEC. I have 4 of them and every single one has dead pixels within 6 months.

Roald 02-10-2004 03:54 PM

Get the Envision 7100si. Best value around. Circuit City and CompUSA carry them.

The image quality, text quality, brightness, color saturation, are all flawless.

Never, ever, ever buy a ViewSonic, Cybervision or Optiquest. They are all made by ViewSonic. I had a horrible experince with CyberVision - I returned thier crappy monitor to them more than four times. They SUCK!

I have a Samsung 171v (black) and I love it. Espically considering I only paid $200 for it at Best Buy last Christmas. It was a demo unit and I got the good deal because they managed to loose the power cord to it - so the manager gave me a big break on it. I was also able to send in the $150.00 mail in rebate because I had the box and the reciept, so I only paid $50 for it.

Mr Pheer 02-10-2004 04:14 PM

I have 2 gateway 17's, a gateway 15, and a viewsonic 17, no problems with any of them

SexxxyChat-T 02-10-2004 04:25 PM

My Viewsonic was all fucked up a month after I bought it (strange lines that would scroll down it and flicker all the time), I used it anyways for about 6 months until I couldn't take it anymore.

I just sent it back for a replacement a few days ago, we'll see what happens to the replacement they give me.

Had to break out the shitty 15" CRT - my poor spoiled eyes are praying that my new monitor gets shipped here soon.

Sony used to be good, now all you are purchasing is their name. Vaio computers are terrible, let alone their screens. NEC Makes an excellent screen (owned 4, never had one problem), Samsung's have an equally good reputation, Phillips, viewsonic, gem, etc, all are crap..

invertiga 02-11-2004 06:26 PM

the samsung 172x is probley the best bet, 500:1 and 12ms responce, which i believe is now the lowest of any lcd (?). Over in .au the cost around $850, so probley bout 600 us ?

Andreas 02-12-2004 01:26 AM

I have the Samsung 192T and i love it :)

I was going to get 2 of these for myself too but read that the games on anything above 12ms were ghosty and shit. First person shooters anyhow.

CRT's still rule for quality, hope the LCD's can catch up some more soon in the games department.

BrettJ 02-12-2004 02:41 AM

sony has awesome LCD's.

better quality picture than one of our high quality 19 inch crt's - using the same video card for both
