Ever had your checks stolen ?

Apparently someone stole an old (years old) checkbook of mine, from a house in another state and started writing about 30-some checks to places like Wal-Mart and Domino's Pizza. Three checks totalled about $985 so far.

Fun fun.
:(

Probably a fake ID.

well it shouldnt affect you since the signatures dont match and your bank is not about to cash them if that doesnt happen.

If they do, then your banks an idiot and its their fault not yours. they will write it off and sent it to their fraud department but you are not going to be charged a thing to your account.

The ID they require is a drivers license or anything else with your photo and signature attached - and the teller has to write down the ID provided. EG. if its a drivers license, then the number is written down. If a fake, then the police are notified, and if they use it again, stores etc. will know it and the person is caught.

Seriously?? I am amazing that your banks dont have these security measures. When you open an account you must sign a signature card - and few stores offer the option of checks - but if you do use one - they take all possible information written down to avoid fraud.

If a bad check is passed - the banks are responsible not you

God I would hate to live in the USA if thats the case - sucks to be you

When my house got robbed they stole a checkbook from me and wrote over $20,000 in checks. :helpme

Thank God I caught it after the first 1,000 and shut the account down but they just kept writing them until the book was empty.

How hard was it to clear up with the people that accepted the bad checks ?

I don't write checks but... If someone successfully cashes one of your checks you are shit out of luck. My partner here had a few 10's of k's stolen from his business account that way.

My robber mainly deposited my checks into other stolen bank accounts and kept a small percentage so they wouldn't ID him.
i.e. write a check to John Smith for 5,000 and deposit it asking for a few hundred back. .... (In that case, they usually don't ID the person).

As for clearing things up with the stores, it depends which ones.... that can be a bitch regardless if you did it or not. In some cases you have to send copies of the police reports into the head office explaining your situation and to be removed from their "black list of check writers".

I feel your pain. :(

like 6 months ago we had this guy who subscribed with a stolen checkbook over and over again REALLY annoying, went to the police and all they did shit... it sucks glad we have debet cards here with pincodes...

We had someone steal checks out of our office once. Also, had a webmaster take a check and change it. Both times the bank took the full loss.
