Installed Latest Version of Windows Media Player - Laptop Now Fucked !!

I installed the latest version of Windows Media Player on my laptop this morning.

When I restarted it, the user page (Windows XP) comes up fine. I select my profile, and it begins to log on. The background for the desktop comes up. That's as far as it gets. No icons, no programs, no start menu. Nothing.

I can hit "CTRL+ALT+Delete" and go to the network tab to log off. That's it.

Same thing happens when I attempt to login with another user ID.

I popped in the Windows XP CD into the drive and selected the "repair" option. Still no joy.

Any ideas?

Gates: No! There are no significant bugs in our released software that any significant number of users want fixed.

wmp9 always crashed my machine until i turned off "acceleration" which i think defaults to "high" on installation

see if you can restart the laptop in "safe" mode, sometimes by hitting f8 once a second when it is first booting up.

then see if you can see programs, and if so, turn off acceleration in wmp9.

good luck.

A microsoft engineer told me most download problems are caused by leaving the antivirus on while downloading updates from microsoft.
