MPEG and RealMedia (.rm)...
Div-x sux becasue it ternds to freeze on slower comps

Daymare 02-05-2004 08:54 AM

Mpeg

doesn't require codex for older machines, highest quality if run at 1 min = approx 10mb at 320x240 and doesn't compress the sound quality or picture. It's compatible with all machines and is simply the BEST way to have one format that fits all.

I would suggest though, for slower connections, to have a wmv version as well. But if you only want one, DEFINITELY go with .mpeg.

:)

EDIT: Also, don't just take it from me... ask Quiet what format he uses and why.... :glugglug

blazin 02-05-2004 08:56 AM

MPEG :thumbsup

Use tmpgenc to compress it to a smaller size

Well what do you want to do with the movies - it all depends.

That's true too.

My mpeg recommendation is for downloadable movies. I am not sure what the best media is for streaming. My guess would be .wmv but I am not certain.

mpeg @350k 320x240 for free stuff and at 600k for members areas. tmpgenc batch utility rox

wmv for streaming - nearly all the world can stream wmv

There are excellent alternatives for RealPlayer and QuickTime on this page that play those formats in the classic WMP.

I agree there are alternatives, but nearly everyone on the internet can watch wmv and mpg without downloading or installing anything extra.

do your surfers really want to install something to watch movies on your site?

my point is, to reach the biggest audience with the least amount of effort... mpg and wmv.

MPEG1 for TGP
WMV for stream video (paid sites)

flashfire 02-06-2004 03:13 AM

I would say mpeg1 also...runs on almost any setup

TheDoc 02-06-2004 03:15 AM

Offer WMV for streaming, they are damn near half the size of MPEG and are better quality. Then offer MPEG's for download, the slow net users will love ya for it and the high speed users can full screen higher quality WMV's..

RealPlayer is trash because of the player, shit loads of users don't have it because of the player.

Definitely not RealMedia, not many people download it to due it being spyware-infested.

TweetyBird 02-06-2004 05:17 AM

Mpeg are kewl.. but if you want to go streaming, you prolly should use WMV :thumbsup

doornx 02-06-2004 07:00 AM

MPEG for galleries / Xvid for members area (large movies)

Smokey The Bear  02-07-2004 02:37 PM

mpg most compatible

I agree with you 100%... I was merely posting those programs for those adamant about not having realplayer on their system but still want to view/listen to realmedia:)

Basic_man 02-08-2004 04:06 PM

Scarab 02-08-2004 04:17 PM

RM sucks.
Fuckin' malware

Why? Betamax was the superior of the 2, just didn't win in the marketplace. TV stations still use them. Sorta like the digital signals everyone is flocking to for their TV, suck big time compared to analog, but hey, mob rules and the govt wants the bandwidth back:winkwink:

Title availablity.

mardigras 02-08-2004 06:59 PM

LOL, I doubt you'll find much available titlewise on Beta outside of the used market, was referring to quality:)

bdld 02-08-2004 07:02 PM

mpeg is my favorite, without a doubt.. least fav would have to be avi or rm

MrIzzz 02-08-2004 07:04 PM

i like to use fingerpuppets to reinact scenes

SleazyDream 02-08-2004 07:05 PM

why not offer seveal format options per movie on a gallery?

Wilber 02-08-2004 08:20 PM

Compress 'em *.swf

It's the smallest compression out of any of them and everybody can see Flash.
Bandwidth is the name of the game.

I took a 5Mb *.avi compressed with divX and other tricks to get it to keep quality
and compress small. After dealing with it to make it an *.swf it remains the exact
same quality only now the file size is 900Kb and plays on any machine with a
Macromedia player installed. Wanna talk saving 4Mb bandwidth-burn on just one vid?
