What're you guys paying per gig of transfer?

What's a good rate?

You can pay as low as $00.26/gig with jupiter hosting. I pay a bit more because I'm on a smaller plan, but you shouldn't be paying more that $00.75/gig...if you are...let me sort you out.

That's all??? Okay that teaches me a lesson. I don't have my own box because I travel too much.

Step one: Send me an email. ([email protected]) Or ICQ me (126813938).

Step Two: Pony up $120 a month for a dedicated box at jupiter, you won't have to lug it around when you travel, we'll keep it in our ultra fine facility for you. That'll get you a super slick server with 300gigs of transfer its about $00.60/gig . Don't sweat the overages they'll never be more than $00.60 per gig. And when you want to grow into a bigger plan, your cost per gig will actually go down.

Step Three: Keep getting listed at the hun.

ROFL! No, I've had big listings before primarily from the news services. Even with a top Hun listing it's not even a gig for the whole day.

The Hun is just a shock cause you don't get warning beforehand.

What I'm concerned with is I have bigger animation projects and the file sizes are big. I wanna plan ahead of time.

Maybe I am missing something here, so pls correct me if I am wrong...

Not for this listing. My host did some cool troubleshooting for me on this one. Quite efficiently to the max!

Soon as I go over more of the data I think I've found a new way by sheer dumb ass luck to maximize this kind of traffic rush.

KRL 02-04-2004 07:48 PM

I got a great deal with Jupiter Hosting.

Oh no. I'm not there at that much yet but it seems whenever I do go after traffic I get it in abundance.

I'm gonna chill out and make sure I do things right.

How is it possible to not burn more than a gig with a hun listing? Doesn't seem to add up to me.

Doc911 02-04-2004 09:07 PM

we pay about 350ish I think a month for each T-1 and about 159 a month for a business class dsl little over 300 dedicated ips over all

Doc911 02-04-2004 09:11 PM

I'll be listed on the hun soon just got my confirmation of acceptance. I'll let you know total bw for the three days. not including extrenuous traffic. ie gallery hunters and secondary linkage.

synergysex 02-04-2004 09:34 PM

Its always higher on a shared server... if you have a dedicated box you can get down there pretty damn cheap. But there is more to conisder than just the cost of the bandwidth. You can get some really cheap bandwidth in some real ratholes, but you'll be up and down more than a two dollar whore on a Friday night.

Its a balance. Cheap bandwidth is worthless if the NOC the box is sitting in is run by idiots and you are always down. On the other hand, you don't want to bend over and take it up the ass.

Right now, I am at about $0.40 per GB on my leased dedicated, but I pay more for a managed box, daily backups and some other services. I could get it cheaper but the people are good to me and the support is always right there.

WiredGuy 02-04-2004 09:41 PM

About $3.50/gig

Before you all start spamming me you can give me better rates, I'm not interested. I'm paying through the roof for my bandwidth for a couple reasons, first and foremost, top notch managed hosting. Second, 99.99% uptime guarantee, I can't afford even an hour of downtime, especially during a Google crawl. Last and foremost, I don't want a host who is tied to the adult industry, call it a conflict of interest, but I don't need people browsing through my backend to figure out how I get my SE traffic.

With that said, I don't even come close to my provider's lowest tier.

I dont know about bandwidth prices in Canada, but here in the states you could almost do it yourself for less than what you are paying others to do it for. Wow - $3.50 a gig is up there... how many gigs do you move in a month?

My servers are dedicated with Rackspace.com, in Texas.

Keep in mind that there are almost a dozen different ways to measure bandwidth usage. Many of the hosts with really low prices use questionable techniques so while it appears you are paying less, you are actually paying more.

1000 x 0.40 is more than 600 x 0.6.

You are getting screwed and you don't know about it ...

synergysex, what do you mean by "do it yourself." Surely you don't mind having a server on a line and location not suitable for one.

Depending on how much bandwidth is being used, he could buy his own box, install a backup generator (they start at about $6K for Natural Gas/Propane units or about $8K for a good Diesel) get an UPS and stick a few T1s into his basement. Its isnt that tough and if done right you can run quite a reliable operation from the basement.
