so if retention is a problem and most users cancel the membership immediately, then why do they still run such sites and pay per sign up on them?

There are lots of factors which will effect how well those sites recur. I believe most of those fake beasty sites give access to lots of bonus sites which keep enough surfers recurring for their to be profit. Either that or there are people who just enjoy looking at naked women posing with animals. Also, there will be plenty of people who forget to cancel their trial and will rebill at the regular monthly subscription rate.

i've read a program rep. saying retention is NOT a problem....but i have no idea if he wasn't just bullshitting
