Time for a new Laptop... P4 mobile or P4 with Hyperthreading
I wanted to wait for the next upgrade on the new Powerbook but that seems like it's never going to come.
What do you guys suggest? Is a slim P4 Mobile worth it? Can it handle video processing and Cleaner effectively or should I go for the 10lb Toshiba with Hyerthreading? |
Id go with the hyperthreading.
The centrino is made for people who travel a lot who work in the real world. They need something light in weight, and long lasting battery life. They dont mess with the cpu intensive programs that involve web editing, photo graphics shit or movie encoding that we may use.. They use programs like word, spread sheet and powerpoint.. Programs used in the real businessworld.. We as webmasters need something with a bit more power. The Centrino (unless you plan just to use it just for email and surfing the web when you travel) is going to be subpar in terms of power we as webmasters demand for our programs and needs. Id go with the P4 Hyperthreading. Leave the lightweight shit for the people who are still stuck in coporate America and fuck with spreadsheets, and word and MS Office bullshit... Go to the gym, get some muscle and carry around that more powerful laptop that ways that whooping 5-6 pounds more in weight. Centrino is for pussies. |
I just got an HP 5500 with the P4. So far I have only used it to surf and test a few things out with the wireless... And the battery only lasts about 1.5 hours. I asked HP and they said that the P$ eats the battery. They also told me that for 300 I could pick up an external batter that would last about 3 hours with the p4...
Other than that it seems to be as fast as shit.. |
Powerbook, the rumors are that updates may show up this month. But I guess you just never know.

Powerbooks with g5 chips won't show up til fall. The 1.42ghz upgrade still can't hold a candle to even higher rated Centrino chips. There's no way I would buy one now. The Dual G5 Powermac we use in the studio is working nicely though. The fact that I travel 60% of the year is the main reason I am considering the pussy processored centrino. I still do the majority of my web work from hotel rooms on the laptop though so I need something that can handle our usual loads. Has anyone used the P4m, the Athlon XP mobile or the Centrino in real action? Or, should I take the wise old sage Boneprone's advice to stop whining and just put that sack of bricks in my laptop bag? |
fuck intel get a optron cpu in your laptop :)

I think by the time the world is ready for an Opteron laptop Mac will have G5 Powerbooks in the market. Ya can't beat that combination. |

i just bought my wife a new laptop tonight.
compaq 2585, P4 2.8 ghz, dvdr, wireless for $945 at bestbuy things sweet just charged up the battery |
I have used a Centrino and found it piss weak comparably to a P4 using Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Vis Studio etc. Centrino is just marketing rubbish to entice non-techy people with WI-FI and longer battery life.
You need the longer battery life because everything takes so fucking long. |
