bigdaddy187 02-02-2004 10:50 PM

Hey NATIONAL-NET my dedicated server goes down every night!

I know this is a dick move on my part posting here but I cannot get any concrete answers from the support staff on why my server is going down every day! So I figure someone else may see this and mention something to someone that counts.

I need to know what the problem is. I ask the support staff to resolve the issues and they do. But when I asked what can be done so this doesn't happen again I didn't get a response.

Every single day it is going down, and I am losing $$$ when the server is down. Not to mention I am now BLACKLISTED on a shitload of sites.

Here are some of the reasons I receive and yet I never get an answer on how this is going to be avoided.

1. The server is back up. It had a small memory issue and had to be rebooted.

2. This has been resloved. The problem here was that your machine had run out of memory.

3. There was an apache process that was hung. We had to reboot the server to get it to die, as the server was "on it's knees". All should be better now...
----

I never ever had a bad thing to say about the company (National-Net) and I don't have anything bad to say now, but I cannot continue to have the server go down and get blacklisted and lose potentials with my paid advertising.

jact 02-02-2004 10:52 PM

Sounds like you should examine the processeses you're running and make sure you aren't over taxing the machine. You may want to split it up onto multiple machines if it's too much load. :2 cents:

Is it a managed server or not?

It is a managed server.

BradShaw 02-02-2004 10:55 PM

Have you tried picking up the phone and calling them? Amazing how well that works sometimes.

We have 20+ servers with them, and have been with nat net for 5 years. When we have server issues, they are always fixed in minutes.

Hey, I never said they didn't fix the problem. My problem is I cannot get an answer from support on what is causing this and what can be done to prevent this.

I ain't bashing them...

hyper 02-02-2004 10:57 PM

sorry for your troubles

Brujah 02-02-2004 11:06 PM

Is it intermittent ? What kind of memory is on the server ? Whats the average load when it's running fine ? Is there something you can pinpoint about the kind of traffic you're getting when it's running out ? Diagnosing this could be time consuming for someone, especially if it's intermittent.

I really don't know it is managed so I am totally disconnected.

Fuck that just move to a host that has a clue. If they reboot your server everynight and can't find what's causing the problem then switch them before your surfers switch you.

acuk 02-03-2004 03:48 AM

I'm sorry to hear about your problems..:(

We've just got a new managed dedicated server with

amateurhosting
(no referral code - just a good service)

Cost's $500.00 a month with 500 gig transfer.

They also run virtual hosting accounts that are the cheapest i've found.
They only charge $1.00 a gig transfer, if you are looking at moving providers i think it could be a smart move..

:thumbsup

JensMoviePost 02-03-2004 03:56 AM

You need a new host if your sites are going down daily.

Hello bigdaddy187,

My name is Bill and I actually run all of NationalNet. I'd like to get to the bottom of this with you. Please contact me at office today and I'll see that we get to the bottom of this. Just call the main number and hit ext 230.

NationalNet has ALWAYS been known for it's support, and if for some reason you are not getting the service you deserve, then I most certainly want to know about it.

I'll be in office at around 10 AM EST and I'll be waiting for your call.

Alternatively, if for some reason you cannot call, you can email me at bill AT natnet DOT com.

Bill

Make sure you're not running any scripts or processes which could be tying up resources and/or crashing your machine. If traffic on your server is heavy, try upgrading your processor or memory.

Thanks for the post, I will try to get you by phone around 10:00.

I had a similar issue like you with my server dying constantly but it was due to me adding 2 mile long .htaccess files with lots of unwanted referrers in it

For over 7 years we've done that, nothing but great service and uptime for all our clients :)

thanks thinkx for that post, made my morning :)

When all of the planets are lined up just right....... Bradley Shaw and I agree on something.

Nat Net's support is THE BEST in the industry.

Pick up the phone, call Bill, and he'll help you out. Sounds to me like you are trying to something with your machine that is killing it every night.

That's what I was going to suggest as well. It certainly sounds like your machine is being overloaded, or perhaps there could be faulty hardware - but that is less likely.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Matt

PbG 02-03-2004 02:30 PM

I hope like hell you are advertising for them because that's embarassing. I doubt anyone here still pays that kind of money for a dedicated server.

I suggest the thread starter ask Nat Net to double your RAM.

If you do leave nat-net, make sure you leave on good terms. They will most likely purchase the hosting company you jump to next week.

Never ever ever ever had a problem with nat-net, they always respond immediately and professionally.

I like the suggestion of picking up the phone. I know for a fact that they do have phones over there.

No shit they have phones over there. I contacted Bill today he is on it.

Also I don't plan on leaving them, shit happens sometimes and this time it is happening to me.

As you see in my posts above I am not trashing them.

GonePhishing 02-03-2004 04:42 PM

They're pretty cool if you call them!

Maybe next time you can contact them BEFORE you publically trash them on a message board.

Your first post trashed them, whether you realize it or not.

Bill and the rest of the NatNet crew are topnoche in our book...
