What Mini Dv Deck do you recommend?

I'm currently shopping around for a new mini-Dv deck. What I need is a deck that has at least these:

firewire connectivity (duh)
RCA imput
S-Video Input

Also, I don't 'need' the big Dv tapes, but it'd be nice if it'd play both mini-dv and dv tapes as well

do any of you go through the selection process?

I was currently looking at either the DSR-11 or the Panasonic AG-2500...

both seem to have similar options, while the AG-2500 is tagged at a lower price...

I am usually editing with Avid also.

what would you guys recommend? perhaps some other models?

On a side note, any Canadians out here know of a good store to buy such equipement?

We have a Sony Deck... but when we setup another station we decided to buy a MiniDV camera and use it as a deck. It is cheaper, and the camera can be used in a pinch.

We use the Panasonic AG DV1000.

It is a good solid machine and has the features you need but only plays mini-dv.

buy a cheap cam and use that as your deck if you only want to get the footage to your hard drive.

We went the cheap mini dv cam route with firewire cable to get the tape in avi format. I think the camera was like $400 at the time.

The cheapest mini dv camera will do the trick..all you need it to do is play, rewind, ect. Just get one with USB/Firewire and you'll be fine..

I think a mini dv deck for pc's is around $1000. A cheap camera will cost you $300 new and even less used..

all true on the cheap camera... but the problem is I also need to have S-Video Input as well as stereo input for sound...

you guys know of any camera allowing that?

The firewire connect should transfer both video & audio. Why the need for S-Video?

I know my TRV900 has a S-video & audio ports for playback on a TV screen, but for capturing video all you should need is the firewire.

magnatique 02-03-2004 04:20 PM

the Svideo and Audio is for analog sources such as Vhs/Dvd that would need to be captured...

I do not need the Svideo /audio outputs... only the INPUTS

Thats exactly what I did, better then killing the motors in my vx2000. I got a samsung minidv cam I am using as my deck and its a cool little cam also for about $300 bucks.
