FL Govt Require Mandatory Ignition Locks After 2nd DUI
About time they addressed this nationwide drunk driving situation.
On Sunday it became law in Florida that if you've been charged and convicted of more than one DUI, the government has the right to install a Breathalyzer Ignition Locking Device in your car(s). Before you can start your car you have to blow into the device and if your blood alcohol level is above 0.05 it locks your ignition switch. You also have to pay a $70 installation charge and $67 a month to maintain the device. The state government has already sent 4,000 drivers notices that they are subject to having the device installed. 1,000 people were killed last year because of drunk drivers in Florida alone. |
Great move.
Now I have new job hanging out on bar parking lots blowing in tubes. :1orglaugh All kidding aside this is a good move. |
Thats a very good move:thumbsup

Wahoo! That is awesome! Florida did something right for once! :thumbsup

Florida is the greatest fucking state in the Union, and I would go so far as to say in most of the world. The fact it is still part of the United States is what limits its true potential. I have lived outside the US and in a shit load of states, so this is not some blather from a born and raise Cracker. Florida is by far the freeest of all of the states. |
they should be mandatory on ALL cars, straight off the production line.
|
That's a very good idea. I have an uncle that needs one of those things so he won't get his 6th or 7th DUI.
|
Hell yeah this is a good idea!
Too bad they're so easily gotten around, though... but still it will help. I like the fact that you have to pay to lease the damn thing too each month. Additional punishment where it hurts - the wallet. |
i have a little question?
why cant you ask someone who is not drunk to blow in to that tube ? |
If you ever knew someone or had a DUI then you'd know its a big money maker for the state and private companies. The amount of fines is enormous.
I hate drunk drivers also because it always seem that when they get into an accident its always the other victim that gets it the worst. my only problem is that there gotta be a better way to determine someones blood alcohol levels. a buddy of mine passed the field test but failed the blow test just because he finished off a drink 15 minutes ago. still busted him with a DUI |

This brings up compounding sentences. The act of DUI will only be compounded with stiffer penalties as you were trying to subvert the device. Knowing Florida if you are the one who blew into the tube, and someone was killed, you would go to prison also. -dd |

In Ontario they are mandatory for a year after your first offence. You also have to hum in them after a few seconds of blowing so they know you just don't have an air compressor hooked up in your back seat. That sounds simple enough but since the machines are so shitty it often doesn't work right. They even tried DNA matching before that but apparently some jackass in Manitoba was filling his back seat up with ballons filled with his own breath. They are also prone to problems in winter due to moisture build up. They aren't the safest things to operate when you are flying down the highway, but still a better choice than letting repeat offenders on the road. Maybe in 5 years the technology will get better. |

GREAT idea! Now if they could just start stricter testing for those over 65, hehehe. :winkwink:
I remember the penny in your mouth from when I was in HS (a LONG time ago....). Supposedly the copper interacts with the amalgam filling in your teeth - provided you have them - and messes up the reading. |
