Um I really don't think it was a fuck up... Bush was well aware that there were no wmd, it was just the excuse he needed to invade. It's not as if anyone outside the US ever thought otherwise.

It doesn't matter if Iraq was a threat or not to us, it was to Israel, and the Jewish power elite in the US lobbied to take Iraq out. No President has ever dared go against the wishes of AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. It has 60,000 of the most powerful, influential and wealthiest Jews in America in its member base. They control the American media from top to bottom.

As a politician, if you don't follow the wishes of AIPAC, consider yourself fucked politically, they'll dig up dirt on you, put it out through their entire media network and bury your career overnight.
